The city of Sumter was in full glory last week. It was certainly a red letter week. The Travelers' Protective Association held its annual convention there and it was entertained most handsomely, and on last Friday Hon. James Wilson, secretary of agricul ture, Dr. B. T. Galloway, chief of the bureau of plant industr}-; Congressman Scott of Kansas, chairman of the agricultural committee, and Congressman Lever, were in attendance on the farmers' convention. These distinguished visitors were also entertained by the city. The chamber of commerce had charge of all the arrangements, and well did they handle the great task. There was an immense crowd, and all forms of entertainment was provided, horse racing, baseball, automobile riding, spec c e > and banquets. The details of this immense affair has been fully published in the daily newspapers. It was a great day, and only demonstrated what a pull together spirit can accomplish. The visit of a cabinet officer, and members of congress to a city means a great deal. Congressman Lever is a member of the committee on agriculture, and he is constantly seeking to secure aid from the government in the interest of the farmer. It was through his influence these distinguished gentlemen attended the farmers'meeting, which, was the grandest ever held in the State, and it is our opinion, Congressman Lever will from this occasion have a ready listener in Secretary Wilson, and Chairman Scott, whenever he wants an appropriation in the interest of agriculture. The large attendance at the farmers' meeting gave ao AL At" monxr fj Qt. K^CLKsH \JL U'UO mail > Ojyuuxi.^1 o u uivoi uw tentive hearing, and when the visitQrs from Washington came to the front a regular old time Southern ovation was extended to each and all of them, especially was this noticeable when that distinguished Iowan, Secretary Wilson, was introduced, the audience rose, cheered, waved handkerchiefs and hats for several minutes, and the cordial demonstration was not lost upon the speaker. He ! was visibly affected by it. The audience also tendered Con- i gressman Lever a grand ovation. In him they realize and appreciate that they have a sincere representative and hard worker, a man who does not waste the people's time in playing politics in congress, but is always doing something in the interests of his constituency, that they should show their appreciation in the presence of the gentlemen from Washington was very proper.?Manning Times. Sease, departed this life May 1J, 1908, aged 75 years, 4 months and 29 days, leaving beside her aged husband, four children, twenty-one grand-children and nine great grand-chiidren. Baptized in infancy and confirmed in early youth she remained a life-long and faithful member of the Lutheran church. During the past year she suffered ! much, but amid all she was patient and resigned, submitting herself, body and soul, to the lord's will. Having passed beyond the scenes of earth, she has left behind the precious confidence that 9he is at rest with the people of God. At 31t. Pleasant Lutheran church, where she was a member, we laid her body to rest in Christian order to await the return of the Lord Je9us. ! B. D. W. ? * t ? Biliousness and Constipation. For years I was troubled with biliousness and constipationr which made life miserable for me. My appetite failed me. I lost my usual force and vitality. Pepsin preparations and cathartics only j made matters worse. I do not know where I should have been today had I not tried Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets. The tablets relieve the ill feeling at once, strengthen the digestive functions, purify the stomach, liver and blood, helping the system to do its work naturally.?Mrs. Rosa Potts, Birmingham, Ala. Turner, of Claremont, were out play, ing at hunting last week with an &mpty gun, the elder brother suggested that Hub climb into a tree and he would shoot him out "like a crow." The younger boy fell into the spirit of the suggestion and climbed the tree. When Johnny snapped the gun, which he thought was not loaded, it went off and the load of shot literally tore the little fellow's heart out and he tumbled to the ground dead. The Stork at Bateshurg.
