It seems that Bryan is safe in South

______
That Lexington county has one of
the best and most popular sheriffs in
the United States was very significant
* at the hanging here on Friday. Many
congratulations were showered upon
him from every side for the brave and
manly manner in which he carried
out the sentence of .the court. Mr.
Huggins, a prominent attorney from
Chicago, was present during the execution.
He 9poke in the highest
praise of Sheriff* Corley, saying that
he had been in many parts of the
United States and he had never seen
a sheriff that commanded so much respect
and attention as did Sheriff
Corley. Such expressions as these
are calculated to "swell" the head of
ourjsheriff, but he is wearing the laurels
with the same grace and dignity
which are so characteristic of the
manly man that he is.

Convention met in the court house
here Monday with a full delegation,
nearly every club in the county being
represented. The convention was
composed of the most intelligent men
in the county?men who carry democracy
oil their faces. In fact, it
was the finest delegation of represen- j
tative gentlemen the county ha9 ever
known. We regret that space will
not permit our publishing the full roll.
The meeting was called to order by
County Chairman C. M. Efird, who
stated the object of the meeting. The
convention was organized by electing
Dr. E. J. Etheredge, of Leesville,
chairman; Mr. F. H. Hendrix, of Leesville,
and Ja9. B. Addy, of Peak, secretaries.
On motion of Mr. Sharpe Laird's
Old Mill was changed to Pool's Mill.
Centre club, which was organized
out of a part of Boylston, wanted to
be admitted. There was a storm of
objection to this move, the opponents
claiming that it would establish a bad
precedent?one that would be felt for
generations to come. After much
discussion the proposition was de

Dr. W. H. Timmerman, of Batesburg,
introduced the following resolution
endorsing Bryan for President,
which was adopted: s
'Whereas, Hon. William Jennings
Bryan has demonstrated his ability as
a leader and democratic endeayor in
thi9 country, and is in every way capable
to represent this great country
in the office of President; and
Whereas, he is a man of exalted,
political and private virtue; therefore
Be it resolved by the Lexington
County Democratic convention, that
they heartily endorse the Hon. William
Jennings Bryan for nomination
by the National Democratic convention
for the office of President of the
United States."
Mr. L. Bennett Frick, from Piney
Woods, offered the following resolution,
which was adopted without a
dissenting vote:
"Whereas, the General Ajsembly,
At its last session, appropriated so
much money that an increased levy
of one-half mill is insufficient to meet
them, and there will still be a considerable
deficit;
Resolved) that we deplore extravagance
in appropriations, and we recommend
to the Democratic voters of
the oounty to support for the General
Assembly men who will endeavor to
ourtail these appropriations."
A resolution/ introduced by Rev.
Joab Edwards, relative to holding political
meetings at St. John's church,
was referred to the executive committee,
