F. D. 1, Pelion, on the 19th by Rev.
T. J. Cupstid.
Gaston certainly needs an express
and telegraph office. This is one of
the be9t fruit growing sections in the
county and this would add much to
the business of the office.
Miss Sallie Kelly closed her school i
here on the 18th and has returned to '
her home.
Hon. W. H. Sharpe was in town j
Monday on business. The Col. is
very popular here and his friends
hope that he will have a clear track
through the coming campaign.
We are going to put up a winning
man for supervisor, also for county
superintendent of education.
W. A. Goodwin has bought the
county rights for Lexington and Orangeburg
counties to manufacture
clothes lines. His factory will be located
in Gaston and will give employment
to a large force of hands.

Bravo Young Girl Shoots Negro
Assailant.
Miss Ellen Quarterman, the fifteen- '
year-old daughter of a merchant who
lives in the 9uburb9 of Thomasville,
Ga., wounded a negro with a shotgun
and was shot at by him several times
on Sunday last.
Miss Quarterman was alone, the
family being at church, when the negro
entered the house and seized her.
The girl broke away, ran into the adjoining
room, got a repeating shotgun
and opened fire on the negro.
The negro fled from the house, but
stopped when he reached the yard
and returned the girl's fire with a pistol.
The negro fired three times, the ,
bullets going through the girl's dress.
The girl retreated to her room and
resting the gun on a window fired
again, and the negro dropped. He
soon rose, however, and made off.

Taxpayers are hereby notified that by
an ordinance duly enacted by the Town
Council of the Town of Lexington, S.
C., a levy of (5) five mills has been
made on all the taxable property within
the corporate limits of said town for
municipal purposes for the year 11)08.
The tax books will be kept open by
the undersigned, at his usual place of
business in said town, for the collection
of the said taxes so levied, from May
4, 1908, to May 30, 1908, both inclusive.
After which time, a penalty of five
per cent, will be added and the books
kept open until June 15, 1908, for the
collection of delinquent taxes and penalty.
