Intemperance in Relation to the
Whiskey Problem.
(Composition by Mi93 MaryBarratt,
Mos9 Hill school, age 16; won second
prize.;
It was a sad day for the world when
the making of whiskey first began.
The use of whiskey in any form is
bad practice, for when men begin using
it there is no telling to what it
may lead them.
A drunk man's face turns red, his
eyes become bloodshot, his limbs are
weakened, he loses his senses and
falls into the gutter; an object of pity
and horrcr.
Many thousand homes are blighted
by whiskey.
The husband or father who drinks
whiskey until he is drunk does not
deserve a home.
Think of the poor wives who spend
their days in misery, striving to keep
things together, and yet unable to do
so because of the men who promised
to love and protect them until death.
Perhaps the habitual drunkard begins
by a glass with a friend; he gets
the taste and then takes another and
another, until finally he craves it,
and is past recalling.
Do not the greater number of crimes
originate in the wine glass? Men become
drunk and shoot down their
friends or even injure their own family,
without realizing what they are
doing, until the^deed is done and it is
too late.
The excessive use of whiskey injures
the physical and mental abilities;
we ought to realize that our minds
and bodies have been given to us by
God to take care of and use for the
benefit of the world, and not wasted
Dy allowing wmsney to Decome uieir
master.
In so beautiful and grand a country
as this all men should be temperate,
and should use their faculties in serving
their fellowman and God.?Green- 1

Lancaster Farmer Shot from
Ambush.
J. B. Simms, a farmer of Lancaster
county, was found lying: face downward
about three miles from Lansaster
on Wednesday, with what is believed
to be 2, mortal wound, having
been shot from ambush. His leftside
is filled with buckshot.
Rev. E. O. Thompson made the
iiscovery and at once summoned L)r.
R. G. Elliott, who attended the wounded
man. It is believed that Simms'
wound is fatal.
Simms' body was found almost at
the identical spot at which the difficulty
between Hampton Stonger and
aimself occurred on February 3, last,
;n which-both men used their pistols,
Stonger receiving a wound which remlted
in his death at a Chester hospital
the following day. Simms, in
he difficulty, escaped without injury,
Simms was tried for the killing of
Stogner at the last term of court, the
:ase resulting m a mistrial.
There is no clue to the assassin of
Simms.

The Ugly Word.
When a lovely lassie tells you,
As you're sitting by her side,
Ehat a man has never kissed her,
Though a dozen men have tried;
though you doubt it, be4bt hasty, I
Let your anger be deferred;
[)o not qualify the lassie
By that short and ugly word.
When a lovely lassie whispers
That she'll never, never wed; ,
rhat she's planned to dwell with
mother
And to care for her instead,
Hold your tongue,O, doubting brother
Many times that tale you've heard;
Just remember that she's a ladyKill
that 9hort and ugly word.
When that self-same lassie murmurs |
That a secret she will keep,
rhat she'll tell no living person?
In her heart 'twill ever sleep,
Don't believe her?do not tell her,
Treat her statement as absurd;
But its not polite to utter
That one short and ugly word.
When a pretty lassie tells you
She can cook, although you kqgw
That her mother's in the kitchen
With her arms deep in the dough,
Doubting brother, be not tractless,
Though the thought may have occurred
;
Though you'd like to, still you musn't
Speak that short and ugly word.
