Like Every Other Growing
City COLUMBIA Will Have
One Select Suburb,
And the question naturally arises as
to where it will be located. That
question settled, there will be the
usual rush to secure lots. Atlanta,
Birmingham, Norfolk and other cities
which have but little advantage over
Columbia in point of population, or
prospects of future growth, have already
advanced the value of choice
suburban property to prices ranging
from $40 to $125 per foot front, and
the time is not remote when Columbia's
choice suburb will be held at
correspondingly high values. We
therefore most confidentially expect
College Place lots to appreciate very
rapidly in value, claiming as the following
reasons will justify that it is

snurwy to uecome ine iasmonauit; suburb
of this* growing city. Lots now
selling at $7.50 per foot front should
bring $10 next year and $20 per foot
front within five years, and not less
than $50 per foot front within 10
years. These estimates are very conservative
supported by the following
correct observations.
First. Its location north of the city
is the direct path of the natural
growth of the city.
Second. It is situated on an elevation
55 feet above the city, having

Ned and Brack Toland have only two
more day9 in which to prepare to
meet their maker. On Friday next,
between the hours of ten and two,
they will be led to the scaffold by
one of the bravest sheriffs that ever
held this high office in South Carolina.
Sheriff Corley will bring the prisoners
over from Columbia on the early
morning train Friday, which is due to
arrive at 7:30. They will at once be
locked in the jail, where they will be
kept until the hour of execution.
The hanging will be strictly private,
as Sheriff Corley will see that the

the letter. He has had hundreds of
applications for admittance, and
while the Sheriff would like to have
the hanging public, the law says not,
and he will follow the law at any and
all hazards.
It is quite likely that the prisoners
will be accompanied from Columbia
by a very strong guard, as was the
case when they were brought here for
trial.
Ifet Awful Deatli.
Laurens, April 25.?Mr. Edwin Hill,
a young man of the Cross Hill section,
was killed yesterday afternoon in a
ino9t horrible manner. He was ploughing
in a field some distance from his
fathers's home and, it is presumed,
unhitched his mule from the plough,
mounted it and rode toward a spring
for water. The mule ran away with
the young man, throwing him and
dragging him all around the field and
through the wood9.
The tracks in the vicinity show that
the animal was headed towards the
spring and also that the body of Mr.
Hill was dragged for a considerable
distance.
The mule went to the house about
dark and, of course, caused fears on
on the part of the family. A party
went out in search of young Hill and
at 11 o'clock found him in an uncon- i
scious state near the field where he I
had been ploughing. His body was
horribly cut and mangled, beaten almost
to pieces against the trees and
rocks. He never regained consciousness
and died last night at 2 o'clock.
Mr. Hill was a hard working, industrious
young man, 18 years of age.
He was a son of Mr. J. C. Hill, of
Cross Hill, and a member of one of
the largest families in the county.

perfect drainage, and a sandy soil,
and is far enough removed from the
river to insure perfect health. This
is a most important factor in selecting
a location for a home.
Third. It being beyond the city
limits, a saving of about two percent,
is made on taxes.
Fourth. The improvements far excel
those in the older portion of the
city, and are now soon to be completed
at no additional cost to the lot
owner. These improvements, being
of the most artistic and substantial
character, argue most convincingly in
favor of College Place becoming the
select residential suburb of Columbia.
Fifth. The splendid Columbia College
is a permanent and substantial
structure, and destined to exert a j
most wonderful influence in drawing i
to that locality the be t class of purchasers.
The culture and refining influence
of this institution will count i
for very much in t&e advancement of j
College Place values.
Reasons may be multiplied indefi- j
nitely for locating at College Place, ,
and it should be noted that it costs j
no more to erect a dwelling in a !
choice location than in an inferior ;
one, and the difference in the out- j
come is as wide as the poles.
