I BUILT AT COLLEGE PLACE.
I WISH I HAD.
The accompanying illustrations tell most clearly thte lesson of human ex
perience. Some people overlook the fact that a good building amid in tenor
surroundings is never worth even its approximate cost, while on the other
hand desirable environments means satisfaction and profit to the owner. The
expense of building in ^ choice location iB no greater than in an inferior one,
and the results are as wide apart as the poles.
Take your choice in the above pictures, locate in the midst of factories
and unsightly surroundings, dr choose a superlatively high and healthful location
where every development is of the highest order.

Like Every Other Growing
City COLUMBIA Will Have
One Select Suburb,
Ana me question naturaiiy arises as
to where it will be located. That
question settled, there will be the
usual rush to secure lots. Atlanta,
Birmingham, Norfolk and other cities
which have but little advantage over
Columbia in point of population, or
prospects of future growth, have already
advanced the value of choice
suburban property to prices ranging
from $40 to $125 per foot front, and
the time is not remote when Columbia's
choice suburb will be held at
correspondingly high values. We
therefore most confidentially expect

' rapidly in value, claiming as the following
reasons will justify that it is
shortly to become the fashionable suburb
of this growing city. Lots now
selling at $7.50 per foot front should
bring $10 next year and $20 per foot
front within five years, and not less
than $50 per foot front within 10
years. These estimates are very conservative
supported by die following
correct observations.
First. Its location north of the city
is the direct path of the natural
growth of the city.
Second. It is situated on an elevation
55 feet above the city, having

Sioots Daughter; Sills Self.
Enraged at his 16-year-old daughter,
Nellie, because of a harmless
school girl prank, Dr. D. 0. Swinnie,
who recently came to Asheville, N.
C., from New York, fired two shots
at her, fatally wounding her and then
turning the revolver on himself, he
placed the muzzle in his mouth and
pulled the trigger, dying almost instantly.
Badly wounded as she was,
with two bullets embedded in her
skull, Miss Swinney ran from the
room upstairs to the principal's room
before she fell.
The iiragedy occurred in the reception
room of the Normal and Collegiate
Institute, a large boarding school
for girls in that city, on Wednesday,
where Miss Swinney had been a pupil
for the past session. Dr. Swinney,
who, up to a few years ago, had been
a prominent physician in New York
city, has for some time past been in
poor health, and of late it is ' alleged
his mind has been unbalanced.
The young woman's recovery is extremely
doubtful. /

That languid, lifeless feeling that
comes with spring and early summer,
can be quickly changed to a feeling of
buoyancy and energy by the judicious
use of Dr. flhoop's Restorative.
The Restorative is a genuine tonic to
tired, rundown nerves, and but a few
doses is needed to satsify the user that
Dr. Shopp's Restorative is actually
reaching that tired spot. The indoor
life of winter nearly always leads to
sluggish bowels, and to sluggish circulation
in general. The customary lack
of exercise and outdoor air ties up the
liver, stagnates the kidneys, ana ofttimes
weakens the Heart's action. Use
Dr. Shoop's Restorative a few weeks

perfect drainage, and a sandy soil,
and is far enough removed from the
river to insure perfect health. This
is a most important factor in selecting
a location -tor a home.
Third. It being beyond the city
limits, a saving of about two percent,
is made on taxes.
Fourth. The improvements far excel
those in the older portion of the
city, and are now soon to be completed
at no additional cost to the lot
owner. These improvements, being
of the most artistic and substantial
character, argue most convincingly in
favor of College Place becoming the
select residential suburb of Columbia.
Fifth. The splendid Columbia College
is a permanent and substantial
structure, and destined to exert a
most wonderful influence in drawing
to that locality the best class of purchasers.
The culture and refining influence
of this institution will count
for very much in the advancement of
College Place values.
Reasons may be multiplied indefinitely
for locating at College Place,
and it should be noted that it costs
no more to erect a dwelling in a
choice location than in an inferior
one, and the difference in the outcome
is as wide as the poles.
A liberal discount is made to purchasers
who will build within one
year from date of purchase, but this

Dear Sir: A few years ago, a New
York daily got-up a great agitation
for dollar gas, and got it. The State
passed the law, and the people liked
it, of course, till the bills came-in.
The bills were bigger, not less; the
law didn't say what the gas should
be. \
The price of a gallon of honest
paint is $1.75; but there's "paint"
all the way from 35 cents to $1.75. A
popular price is -$1.25; there are scores
of "paints" at that price. Like dollar
gas.
If $1.75 is the price of a gallon of
honest paint, you may be quite sure
there are scores of "paints" at all
prices from that down, with paint
enough in them to pass for. paint.
And what are you going to do about
it?
It takes from |2 to $4 a gallon to
pay the painter for doing his work.
Is it worth while to pay $2 to |4 a
gallon for brushing on paint half
whitewash?
No; the expense of that extra and
useless labor makes counterfeit paint
cost more than true.
The remedy is Devoe. There are
eight honest paints; Devoe is the
strongest one of the eight.
Yours truly,
