New Brookland Boy Writes
to Home and Farm.
Here comes a South Carolina boy
to join your happy band. My grandpa
takes dear old Home and Farm. I
enjoy reading the Violet Corner very
much, and all the cousins' letters. I
have been going to school this winter,
and have studied very hard. I think
we should strive to get a good education.
As for boys having better edu4-Vt

thej7 should be alike. Boys can do
almost any kind of work, but a girl
without an education might have it
hard.
I am in the Fifth grade. My studies
are geography, history, grammar,
arithmetic and spelling. Our school
closed last Friday (March 20). My
teacher's name was Miss Ethel Dreher.
She is a good teacher. How
many of the cousins have my age? I
am twelve years old. I have three
sisters and ane brother. I don't see
many letters from South Carolina.
Wake up, boys and girls, let's don't
let our dear old State get behind.
Jewel Lovingwood, your riddle is a
watch.
I will give a few riddles for some
one to answer:
Black upon black, and black upon
brown,
Three legs up and six legs down.
Life at both ends, dead in the middle;
Round at both ends and high in the
middle.
I will close. Your Lexington coun

Mrs. Ruth Bryan Leavitt, daughter

Uairo, Egypt, a formal letter declinng
to stand as delegate representing
he women of her State at the Naional
Democratic convention. Mrs.

lot be in good taste for her to go into
he convention a9 the avowed cham>ion

A new star shines in the newspaper
leaven. Recently Miss Estelle Smoak
ripped gracefully into the sanctum
if the Branchville Journal, seated
icrself in the easy chair and penciled
s pretty a salutatoiy as was ever
ublished in South Carolina. Surely

Gso. Johnstone Will Run.
Col. George Johnstone was seen by The
Herald and News a few days ago
and asked for a definite statement as
to whether or not he would be in the
campaign for the United States senate
this summer to succeed Senator
Gary. Col. Johnstone was told by
your correspondent that there seemed
to be an impression among some in
South Carolina that he had not yet
announced, and that it had been stat- 3
ed by persons in different parts of the
State that they did not know whether
or not he was in the race.
"You may state," said Col. , Johnstone,
"that I will be in the campaign.
I thought that I had made it
clear that I would be in the race, and
regret that there has been any misapprehension.
I will in a few days I
have something to say in regard to j
the issues which I propose to discuss, {
and the platform upon which I will
make my campaign."
Thi9 positive statement made by
Col. Johnstone will dispel any doubts
which may have been entertained as
to his candidacy.
Col. Johnstone stated that he appreciated
the many assurances of support
which he had received from every
section of South Carolina, and
that he felt very much encouraged in ;
making the race.?Newberry Herald
