Lindsay, of the United States signal
corps, at San Francisco, Cal., shot
and killed himself a few days ago.
Lindsay was in love with a girl who
lived in his "birthplace, Philadelphia,
but could not hope to marry her
while he remained in the arm v. Before
sending a bullet through his
brain, the young officer destroyed all I
his papers, including his letters from
the Philadelphia girl, all his pictures
of her, several of which he had carried
constantly, and everything that
could reveal her identity.

Prof. Swearingcn Will Run.
Prof. J. E. Swearingen, a member
of the faculty of Cedar Springs institute,
has annouced his candidacy
for State superintendent of education.
He says he has entered the race to
win and will make it lively for the
other candidates.
Prof. Swearingen-has been totally
blind since he was thirteen years of
age, but his defect has not prevented
him from doing things. He attended
the Cedar Spring institute, after
which he graduated from the South
Carolina university, being the honor
man of his class. For nine years he
