The Kansas state attorney has issued a statement regarding the effects of prohibition which went into effect in Kansas City, July 1, 1906, in which he states that the official records show that during the year following the closing of the saloons the city building operations increased 209.7 per cent. He also says: "The closing of the saloons has reduced our court expenses $25,000 a year, which was formerly spent in the prosecution of criminals. During the time the saloons were open there was never a term of court that did not require from six to eight weeks to try criminals. Since then no term has been more than three weeks, and one term we did not have a single criminal for trial. This month the same court took only three days to try all the * ** t _ i_ n criminal cases on tne aocKeu jDvery saloon was closed on July 3, 1906. Less than three months' after our schools opened. In former years we had to employ from six to eight addiI tional teachers by reason of the in, crease in population, but there was > such an unusual demand for admis/ sion that we had to employ eighteen | new teachers. J went to the teach> ersandsaid, "From whence comes > this large demand for admission to ? our public schools?" The result was 1 a list of 600 boys and girls from twelve ' to eighteen years of age who attend ed the public schools last year for the > first time. Augusta, Ga., April 1.?The family of Mr. Calyin C. Seago, living about six miles from Augusta, on *'the old Savannah road," were saved from death by fire last night by a turkey gobbler. Fire started in the kitchen and was rapidly burning toward the front of the house when the family was awakened by a terrific noise made by the turkey in the yard. The fire was confined to the rear portion of the house. Death Was on His Heels. Jesse P. Morris, of Skippers, Va., had a close call in the spring of 1900. He says: "An attack of pneumonia left me so weak and with such a fearful cough that my friends declared consumption had me, and death was on my heels. A dispatch from Washington says: The sub-committee of the Senate judiciary committee thinks that it has at last devised a plan which will seriously interfere with the shipment of i liquor from another State into a prohibition State. The committee has practically agreed to report a bill, the gist of which is that express companies shall be restrained from handling ) liquor shipments consigned to prohibition States. This is sought to be accomplished by making it unlawful for express companies to act as agents either for the consignor or the consignee. Some > States already have a law of this kind. It is held that if express companies can be prevented from transporting lottery tickets they can also be inhibited from carrying liquor. The subjudiciary committee concluded some time ago that shipments of liquor into prohibition States could not be prevented by subjecting such shipments to the police regulations of the States, and as a result all bills predicated upon that principle were rejected. Mr. S. L. Bowen, of Wayne, W. Ya., writes: "I was a sufferer from kidney disease, so that at times I could not get out of bed, and when I did I could not 1 stand straight. I took Foley's Kidney Cure. Mourned as dead for thirty-five years, Taylor Carson has arrived at the home of his brother, J. L. Carson, in Spartanburg, bringing with him a store of wealth realized from the sale of a gold mine at Rawhide, Nevada, says a dispatch to the News and Courier. Mr. Carson left his home in North Carolina thirty-five years ago and went west. Nothing was heard of him until last Saturday night, .when he arrived at the home of his brother in Spartanburg. The meeting of the two brothers was indeed happy, for each thought the other dead. Taylor Carson, after going west, engaged in gold mining, meeting with more or less success, Several months ago he went to rawhide and opened a mine that vielded rich returns. He made his pile and decided to return south. Before quitting the west he closed out his interest in the mine for one hundred and forty-eight thousand dollars. Chamberlain's Has the Preference. Belton Hargrove, a white farmer was shot in the face and seriously wounded in Greenwood county on Monday by Milledge Colt, colored.
