Sale of Fertilizers.
%
The state treasurer is receiving daily
several thousand dollars on the tag
tax royalty, the proceeds of which go
I to Clem9on college. The tag tax is
25 cents upon each ton of fertilizer
| shipped out, the tax being placed for
| the chemical analysis made by the
| authorities at Clemson.
So far this year $117,017.85 has been
I received against $112,745.85 for the
9ame time in 1907. This would indicate
a very large increase this year in
i farming operations,
j | The total receipts for 1907 amounted
to $150,984.81 against $167,158.39
for 1906, which was the record year.
As will be seen the receipts are
largest at this time of the year although
several thousand dollars are
received in the fall.
Several days within the past two
weeks the receipts have amounted to
over ?3,500 daily.

Cotton Mills to Curtail.
I Greenville, March 16.?A conference
i of the members of the South Carolina
Manufacturers' association will be held
in this, city7 Wednesday for the purpose
of considering the question of
curtailment of production of cotton
goods. At a meeting of the association
in December it was decided to reduce
the output 25 per cent, during
the months of January, February and
March, and it will be determined at
the meeting Wednesday whether or
not it is advisable to continue this reduction
for a longer period. The cause
assigned for the calling of the conference
is the lack of demand for cotton
goods and the absence to a large
extent of export trade.
Discharged Road Overseers.
Supervisor Koon is determined that
road overseers do their duty. In a
conversation with Mr. Koon yesterday
he stated most positively that it
was his intention to discharge every
overseer in the county who failed to
perform his duty. It was learned,
also, that several road overseers have
already been "ousted" because they
have been negligent m caning out
hands.
This looks bad and we trust- that
^every man, in chargej of the different
roads of the county, will see to it that
the roads are kept up. Call out. the
hands though they be few in number.
