Wednesday, March 11, 1908. Postal Savings Banks. A special from Washington says.: Senator Knox, of Pennsylvania, has introduced in the senate a bill providing for the establishment of postal savings banks. This bill has the approval of Postmaster General Meyer and will have the backing of President Roosevelt and the administration. i ?j A- J? ID is aesignea to pruviue a oaic uepo9itory for the savings of the people and incidentally it is expected to wield a large influence towards the prevention of financial panics in the fnture. Under its terms, the Postmaster General i9 authorized to designate certain postoffices a9 postal savings banks. Deposits of from one dollar to five hundred dollars will be received at these banks and the government will pay interest at the rate of two per cent. It is provided that deposits shall be considered public moneys and subject to the safeguards, and preferences provided by statute. This will guarantee absolute safety to these savings deposits and in times of financial disturbance people who have been in the habit of withdrawing their money from the banks and hoarding it in hiding places are expected to deposit it with the postal savings banks. The funds thus deposited with the government will be redeposited in national banks and thus the money will be kept in circulation. Bank books are to be provided for deposi tors and money can be withdrawn at any time subject to regulations made by the Postmaster General. Had some such measure been enforced during the past six months, it is believed that the financial panic through which the country has just passed would have been averted. Senator Knox has given this subject careful study, and will exert his influence to secure the passage of the bill at this session of congress. ? ? ? Good For Everybody. Mr. Norman R. For six years a bitter feud had existed between the; Browns and Robinsons, next door Neighbors, says Tit Bits. The trouble had originated through the depredations of Brown's cat, and had grown so fixed an affair that neither party ever dreamed of "making up." One day, however, Brown sent his servant next door with a peace-making note for Mr. Robinson, which read: "Mr. Brown sends his compliments to Mr. Robinson, and begs to say that his old cat died this morning. *P Robinson's written reply was bitter^ "Mr. JKODinson is sorry to near vi Mr. Brown^s trouble, but he had not heard that Mrs. Brown was ill." Hog Cholera. The greatest drawback to the hog industry which breeders in this country have to contend with is what is known a3*"hog cholera" and "swine plague." Hog cholera is a highly contagious disease and unless checked is liable to carry off a great number of hogs in a very short time. Mr. A., P. Williams, of Burnetts Creek, Ind., tells of an experience which he had with some hogs thathad the cholera. "Five years ago," says Mr. Williams, "I was in the employ of Mr. J. D. Richardson, Lafayette, Ind., as his barn foreman. Some fine hogs that I wTas feeding took the cholera. I gave them Sloan's Liniment and did not lose a hog. Some were so bad they would not drink sweet milk and I was compelled to drench them. I have tried it at everv opportunity since and always find it O. K." Evander Bostick, a negro, was shot and killed by Willis Crosland, another negro, near Bennettsville, Wednesday night, as a result of a quarrel over a game of cards. Forty-five men interested in locker clubs in Savannah for whom indictments had been issued, plead quilty before Judge Emery Speer and signed agreements that they would not sell any more liquor in Georgia. The attacks of "night riders'' continues in Kentucky and the military men are working under secret orders and are guarding the property in the districts where outbreaks are expected. After being out a few minutes the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Jude-e Aldrioh sentenced two blind tigers to serve three months and six months, respectively, on the county chaingang at Darlington, last week. Senator Tillman has introduced a resolution in the Senate which purports to have the comptroller of the currency to make a detailed statement of all the loans made by national banks in New York city, upon collateral security, from June 1st to Decemcer 1st, 1907, with the full names of the borrowers; whether they are time or call loans and whether call loans are made by executive officers of the banks by order of the board of directors. One hundred and seventy-five school children perished in an angry fire at Cleveland, Ohio, on Wednesday. The fire originated from a defective furnace in the basement of the school building. A panic among the children followed and hundreds were trampled to death and their bodies completely consumed in the flames. One fireman, after saving 18 children, fell from exhaustion and died immediately. The scene was heartrending, as the fond parents stood by powerless to aid their loved ones in making escape. The screams of the children, as their bodies anguished in the fire caused hundreds of women <o faint, and the excitement was intense. $100 Reward, $100. JJnited States Senator Redfield Proctor, of Vermont, died at his apartments in Washington on Wednesday after an illness of one week following an attack of grip. The tax levy has been raised from four and a half to five and a half mills? 1 Dog's Bone in Arm. Vernon Wolfe, a boy of 14, underwent an unusual operation at Oaktown Ind., recently. The bone of his forearm, which had -1 been diseased, was removed and the bone from the leg o f a St. Bernard dog was substituted. The dog was chloroformed in an adjoining room and the bone was taken from the lad's arm and the dog's bone quickly substituted. The surgeons believe the boy will have perfect use of his arm. Furman Moody, was convicted of murder in the criminal court at Darlington on Thursday and sentenced to be hanged on the first Friday in May. Four alleged moonshiners were captured in Greenville county on Thursday and bound over to the court of general sessions.
