Jf; " Business Trip to Prosperity.
: Oil Thursday it was the Editor's
pleasure to take a business trip to the
Deautiful and growing town of Prosperity.
It was our first visit to this
little town and to say that we were
-delighted with the people of the place
is putting it mildly^
Prosperity is backed by one of the
best farming sections in South Caro'
lina, and the merchants of the place
; do a' large business throughout the
-v ; year, ^dust at this season, however,
% when all the fanners are busy, and
the reads bad, * business is on the
; "quiet" toaO towns. But Prosperity
\ is ? great distributing centre of fertilg
izers, and hundreds of wagons were
seen loaded with guano of the manydifferent
brands, during our short stay
" there.* . .<
The town-can boast of some hand-:
1 some store buildings and residences,
all of which lends attractiveness to
the general surroundings. . The stores
carry large and well selected stocks'
and yon can find any class of merV
%, chandise you may wish right in this
little town. Two banks?Thh People's
National Bank and the Bank , of Pros\
perity?are both in a prosperous conV
"* dition, .the financial stringency now
b&ng a thigg.of the.past. The school ,
\ jis one of the beat in the country, and
' is under the supervision of competent
teachers. 1
The people are God-fearing, as is I
evidence^ by the number of churches \
m the place, \Wrich speaks wen for
' X the'people of the town and surround
ing community.
While our stay was short it was none 1
the less enjoyed, and we trust that
fortune will cause us to again visit the
town at no distant future. K

r% " Solicitor George! Bell Timmerman
made an, earnest appeal to the citi'
zens, of New Brookland on Friday
night to let the law take its course in
r . the qase of the two negioes who so .
brutally and savagely murdered the '
aged Mrs. Ellisor at her home on
Wednesday. The Solicitor promised
to use his best efforts to get an early
trifil. Gov. Ahsel should grant Mr.
^ Timinerman's request in this case and
order the special term without delay.
At the same time, we don't believe
L there hr any danger of a lynching;
i we have more faith in the good citizehship
of our county. The negroes
* V ' will undoubtedly get a speedy trial,
. > and the culprits legally executed. To
i attempt to take the law into their
own hands aowr would be disgraceful
and unbecoming to a civilized and:
law-abiding community. We appeal
to Gov. Ansel for an early trial and
- *_. i
we appeal to tne gooa peppie or our
/county not to interfere, l>ut let the
law take its course. We feel safe in
saying that once the men are placed
in the care of Lexington's brave and 1
manly sheriff, the majesty of the law ?
will be upheld at any and all hazards.
1
\ The legislature made a grave, mis,
' take when they refused to increase
the salary of the attorney general of
South Carolina. The legislature
should raise the salary of tl e
attorney general to five thousand doi>
lars, which, to our mind,; would be
r, a small sum when compared with the
Work of the office. Such a salary '
would cause m,en well learned in the
law and capable of meeting the most
formidable lawyers in legal combat in
any court in this broad land, to offer
for the position.
Sheriff Corley will undoubtedly ^
have the opportunity of putting to
death two of the most attrociou9 and
j dastardly murderers ever condemned
to' die in this or any other State. .
' That he wilj do so in a decent and
orderly manner is not doubted, for
he never does things by halves.
Just as we predicted. The, dispenN
sary commission has gotten into j
deeper water. The action of Judge
Pritchard in taking charge of the (
entire matter was expected. In the
end the people of South Carolina will
lose hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Time Esteudei in Harder Case.
Judge John S. Wilson has signed, :
an order in the case of Samuel W. j
Stockman, convicted of manslaughter
1 and sentenced to serve seven years in
the State penitentiary, extending the
time for his attorneys to perfect the i
appeal to the supreme court until
April 10.
It will be recalled that Stockman I
" was tried at the August term of court
in 1907, for killing his son-in-law, H. (
h J. Hartley. I
Mr. Lewis Corrects Report.
The report having been circulated I
that Mr. J. A. Lewis, of Gilbert, had j
' been soliciting money for Mr. C. E. (
Ballington, the father of the twins i
and triplets, of which mention has
been made in these columns, Mr.
Lewis requests us to publish the following
receipt and statement from
Mr. Ballington. Mr. Lewis states that
he has been over in Richland county
and was nor a^rare of the false report
until he returned to Gilbert on Saturday.
The statement follows:
"Received from J. A. Lewis ?8.25,
the amount in full collected by him
in Columbia, S. C. This money was
collected through kindness of Mr.
Lewis. C. E. Ballington,
Gilbert, S. C., March 3, 190S."
