'j Tbs Suicide Was Freeland.
j There is no longer any doubt but
that the aged man who attempted
j suicide in a hotel in this city several
j months ago and who later ended his
; life in Little Mountain, was Captain
| A. N. Freelaud, a one time prominent
j resident of Sumter. A letter which
Mr. Louis H. Cary, a cotton buyer of
this city, who boarded at the hotel in
which the suicide was attempted, has
received from a daughter of Captain
Freeland, has removed all doubt as to
the man's identity.
The letter in question was from
Mrs. Lillie F. Bradley and she asks
Mr. Cary to get her father's watch
and umbrella from the pawn shop and
send it with the old gentleman's other
belongings to her. She says "I want
to thank you many times for the attention
which you gave my father
while he Vas in your town. Papa
was always a very proud man. If he
had only told us that he was in need
of funds we would have been glad to
have aided him. He was in Sumter
during the latter part of November to
see us but did not intimate that he
was in need. He told us that he -was
on his way to Florida to spend the
winter." Mrs. Bradley told Mr. Cary
that she would pay the pawn on the
watch and the umbrella.?Greenville

She Did Not Fear Death.
An old lady on her seventy-third
birthday once said, "I do not mind
, getting .old, and I do not fear death,
but I live in constant dread of paraly
sis.''
"For some time I have been wanting
to tell you of the great good your
wonderful Sloan's Liniment is doing
here," writes Mr. Jamas F. Abernethy,
of Rutherford Coljege, N. C. "In
fact, all your remedies are doing
noble work, but your Liniment beats
all. In my eight years' experience
with medicine I find none to go ahead
of it, having tried it in very many
cases. I know of one young man, a
brick mason, who suffered from as
*
partial, yes, almost complete, paralysis
of one arm. I got him to use your
Liniment, and now he can do as much
work as ever, and he sings your praise
every day. I get all to Use it I possibly
can and know there is great virtue
in it. I have helped the sale of your
noble remedies about here greatly,
and expect to cause many more < to
buy them, as I know they can't be
beat."

- State Tazes Increased.
Thursday the ways and means committee
at a meeting decided on a levy
of mills State tax for ordinary
purposes. This is a raise of 1 mill and
will, it is estimated, leave a deficit of
about $30,000. The levy was fixed
with a probability of the appropriation
of $24^000 for Winthrop, $6,200 for
the new judicial circuit and $10,000
for the raise in salaries of auditors
and treasurers being inserted in the
appropriation bill. It does not include,
however, $12,000 for the Confederate
infirmary.
It is estimated that the appropriations
this year will be nearly $1,600,000,
an increase of nearly $200,000 over
1907.
The editor of the Memphis, Tenn.,
"Times" writes: "In my opinion Foley's
Honey and Tar is the best remedy
for coughs, oolds and lung trouble, and
to my own personal knowledge Foley's
Honey and Tar has accompiisnea many
permanent cures that have been little
short of marvellous." Refuse any but *
the genuine in the yellow package. Derrick's

Husbands and Wives.
He that has not got a wife is not
yet a complete man.
One good husband is worth two
good wives: for the scarcer they are,
the more they are valued.
Marry above thy rank and thou
wilt get a master.
If you want a neat wife, choose her
on a Saturday.
Marry your son when you will, but
your daughter when you can.
I know not which live more unnatural
lives, obeying husbands or commanding
wives.
A good wife lost is God's gift lost.
Where there is marriage without
love, there will be love without marriage.
, A house without woman and firelight,
is like a body without soul or
spirit.
Never take a wife until you have a
house to put her in.
Good wives and good plantations go
by good husbands.
