S. F. Derrick has been forced to
abandon his studies at Newberry, on
account of his eyesight.
A aad gloom was cast over our community
recently by the very sad death
of the little four-year-old son of Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Williams. A horse
jockey by the name Tireman, from
North Carolina, has been* spending
some time here. It seems that he
had placed some carbolic acid, which
he had secured to administer to a sick
horse, on a table and the little fellow,
while unnoticed, drank a portion of
it*. Medical aid was rendered at once,
but to no avail, the little child dying
in a few minutes.
Miss Edna Mae Fallaw and brother,
Cash, two of San .Dam's popular young
people, visited their sister, Mrs. W.
B. Fallaw, recently.
On the 25th Haskell Busbee and
Miss Iva M. Goodwin were married
by Notary Geo. W., Pound.
- Postoffice and Route Inspector Sam
W. Kingsmore, was here a few days
ago and found the office in apple-pie
order. He inspected route 1, with a
view to extending the same. Postmaster
Hartley has made some changes
in the arrangement of the office
here, which was necessitated by the
increased amount of mail. He makes
an ideal postmaster, well liked by all,
especially the poor R. F. D. boys.
Z. A. W. Sturkie has closed out his
mercantile business here and moved
with his family back to his farm.
Auditor Dent and Editor Harman
were hei;e recently. We were pleased
to meet them and to know they are
enjoying excellent health, especially
the editor.Our
hearts go out in deep sympathy
to the bereaved ones who are mourning
the death of their dear father, J.
J. Smith, which occurred at Edmund
some time ago. Mr. Smith was nearly
84 years of age. The- writer has
known him all his life. He was an
upright, Christian citizen, a noble
father and a true husband. He was

shop still stands under which he
taught for a few weeks until a house
could be prepared. The east side and
south end are open. Under here I
learned my A. B. C's. He was one
of the foremost educators of his time.
He was an excellent blacksmith and
wheelwright, as well as a firstclass
mechanic and millwright. There are
houses and mills all over this immediate
section erected by him, which
stand as monuments to his worth.
He served his county as school commissioner.
His son, Prof. J. Y.
Smith, one of the best teachers in the
county, was trained very extensively
by his father. His remains were laid
to rest in the old family burying
ground in the presence of a large host
of sorrowing friends and relatives.
The memorial services were conducted
by Rev. S. P. Shumpert.
Our graded school has an enrollment
of 115. We need a larger and better
equipped building, with three teachers.
Messrs. Trustees and patrons,
let us get together and build it. The
age demands it; we owe it to our
children. Let us build and equip this
school building and coming generations
will rise up and call us blessed.
Brother law-makers, give us pure
prohibition and an anti-cigarette law.

Found Pearl in Oysters.
Waynesboro, Ga., Jan. 30.?At
supper last night, Mr. Simeon Bell,
Sr., who was munching on some very
fine oysters, discovered a fine pearl
in one of them. He says it is a very
pretty stone and he prizes it very
highly. He is being congratulated
upon his good fortune.

Since Your Mother is Dead and
Gone.
(In memory of Mrs. Sallie Shull by a
friend.)
I
In dear old Mt. Hebron grave yard,
There you 9ee a mossy mound;
There is where your mother is sleeping,
In the cold and silent ground.
Gently waves the weeping willow,
Birds are singing sweet at dawn;
But your heart is sad and lonely,
Since your mother is dead and gone.
In dear old Mt. Hebron grave yard,
Oft you stroll with heart forlorn,
For there's no one left to love yon

That sad eve your mother died,
There you watched her spirit fading
Till she called you to her side.
Then she softly whispered, "Darling, '
I must leave you,
Angel's voices guide me on,M
Pray that we may meet in heaven,
Since your mother is dead and gone.
Oft you wander to that grave yard,
Flowers to plant with tender caie
On the grave of your dear mother,
Friends find you weeping there.?
Looking at the sky above you,
Waiting for the heavenly dawn,
For there^ no one left to love you,
Since your mother is dead and gone.

He is a shepherd, about 6 months
old. When he was a small pup Mr. {
Boazman sent him to Newberry to be

three weeks ago, when he was carried
back home. He did not seem to be
satisfied there, and on Saturday went
to the depot at Chappells and got on
the train to come back to Newberry. !

and I made np my mind to try
the medicine. I had seen leading physicians
without number both East and

me in the least, and I no more believed
this Cooper medicine could help

back to life. I really don't know why
[ bought it It was like a drowning
man clutching at a straw.
"To make a long story short, it baa
