Derrick has been forced to abandon his studies at Newberry, on account of his eyesight. A aad gloom was cast over our community recently by the very sad death of the little four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Williams. A horse jockey by the name Tireman, from North Carolina, has been* spending some time here. It seems that he had placed some carbolic acid, which he had secured to administer to a sick horse, on a table and the little fellow, while unnoticed, drank a portion of it*. Medical aid was rendered at once, but to no avail, the little child dying in a few minutes. Miss Edna Mae Fallaw and brother, Cash, two of San .Dam's popular young people, visited their sister, Mrs. W. B. Fallaw, recently. On the 25th Haskell Busbee and Miss Iva M. Goodwin were married by Notary Geo. W., Pound. - Postoffice and Route Inspector Sam W. Kingsmore, was here a few days ago and found the office in apple-pie order. He inspected route 1, with a view to extending the same. Postmaster Hartley has made some changes in the arrangement of the office here, which was necessitated by the increased amount of mail. He makes an ideal postmaster, well liked by all, especially the poor R. F. D. boys. Z. A. W. Sturkie has closed out his mercantile business here and moved with his family back to his farm. Auditor Dent and Editor Harman were hei;e recently. We were pleased to meet them and to know they are enjoying excellent health, especially the editor. Our hearts go out in deep sympathy to the bereaved ones who are mourning the death of their dear father, J. J. Smith, which occurred at Edmund some time ago. Mr. Smith was nearly 84 years of age. The- writer has known him all his life. Under here I learned my A. B. C's. He was one of the foremost educators of his time. He was an excellent blacksmith and wheelwright, as well as a firstclass mechanic and millwright. There are houses and mills all over this immediate section erected by him, which stand as monuments to his worth. He served his county as school commissioner. His son, Prof. J. Y. Smith, one of the best teachers in the county, was trained very extensively by his father. His remains were laid to rest in the old family burying ground in the presence of a large host of sorrowing friends and relatives. The memorial services were conducted by Rev. S. P. Shumpert. Our graded school has an enrollment of 115. We need a larger and better equipped building, with three teachers. Messrs. Trustees and patrons, let us get together and build it. The age demands it; we owe it to our children. Let us build and equip this school building and coming generations will rise up and call us blessed.
