New York, Jan. 22.?Twenty million dollars wa9 paid to savings bank depositors in New York city Wednesday, and with the payment vanished the last vestige of the recent money panic. Coincidental with the semiannual interest payment, several of the larger savings institutions were informed by banks of deposit that no more currency could be used by them as their vaults were full. Thus New York turned its back on the panic Of 1907. In connection with the payment of interest to savings bank depositors for the last half of 1907 there were several unusual features. Never before had the lines of depositors been so long as they were Wednesday at the windows, to have the interest credited. Several weeks ago a few of the smaller banks* notified their depositors that the notices of withdrawal that were given during the uncertain days of November, would have to be recalled or the interest due them would be forfeited. Among thousands of depositors who were ignorant of the technicalities of banking the impression gained ground that in some way they had forfeited tneir interest, iney Degan to arrive early with their bank books. All stood in line until they had their interest credited, and then went straight away happy. The total deposits in Kew York city savings banks are approximately; $1,000,000,000. All of the banks are on a four per cent, annual interest basis, which calls for $40,000,000 a year interest to depositors.
