White Has Out by Negro.Jj
dome time during the afternoon
yesterday Mr. Fred Shumpert and t
Steve Meetze, a negro, became invol- i
ved in a difficulty in the, store of Mr. I
Dempsy George, at the depot.
It is said that Meetze cursed Shumpert,
whereupon the latter knocked
him down with an axe handle. Thinking
he had killed the man Mr.
Shumpert turned to walk away, when
suddenly the negro jumped to - his
feet, opened his knife and used it with f
effect upon the cheek of the white jj
man, making a painful though not ^
serious wound. His thumb was also j
cut. Sheriff Corley was soon on the 1
scene and the negro was lodged in 4
(ail.
The wounded man was brought to
the offiice of Dr. Derrick where he
received proper attention.
