Their devotion was not that of the reckless I followers of Napoleon., It was like the love and trust of children for a father. He rode and walked and talked among them like a farmer with his sons. They knew his great mind planned for their safety as. well as their glory; they knew he was faultlessly brave; absolutely free from personal designs; that his heart and soul were wrapt pp in them; that he shared their triumphs and their suffer ?il?r no if V* n TTTO H. lQgy its la UJLJT ag ll ut nviv W f" ' ? soldier. * Lee's place in the Virginian heart is next to Washington, whom he much resembled?in some things even ahe^ad or Washington. There was more love in Lee's composition than in Washibgton's. . j; I count it an inestimable privilege that I knew this great man?not as an equal or an intimate, of course, but as a very humble and a very insignificant young person who was allowed to touch the hem of his garment. I know all the other great military leaders of that period?Grant, Johnston, Sherman, Sheridan?had many opportunities to observe them in public and in private. None of them impressed me as did General Lee. Possibly I was partial, but I do not think so. About that war I am a philosopher. It was ineyitable, and the men on both sides were equally sincere and equally entitled to respect. Neither victory nor defeat' decided the' question who was the greatest soldier. History must decide that upon the facts, viewed .without bias when all passion has subsided. With the same satisfaction I fe^l that I have viewed the Rockies, Niagara, the boundless billows of midocean^ the starry vault of heaven amidst inanimate things; I thank God that I was permitted to see Robert E. Corley, of Columbia and Miss Lucia Augusta Wilson were happily married Dec. 26th, 1907, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Wilson. Rev. H. C. Fennpl performed the cereniony. , Elegant refreshments were served. The bridegroom is a highly esteemed business man of Columbia and the bride has always been a great favorite with the people of Abbeville. Their happiness is assured and they have the best wishes of all.?The Abbeville Medium. A Mother's Horrible Death. Charlottesville, Va., Jan. 2?Mrs, Edward Kirby, -wife of the assitant at the county home here, was roasted to death at noon today in the presence of her terrified little children. The woman's clothing ignited from a fire in the stove. Her body was fearfully burned. / After Twenty-Nine Years. "For twenty-nine years I have been at intervals a great sufferer from rheumatism, writes' James Hyde, of Beebe. Ark. "i)uririg that time I used gallons of various kinds of liniments and oils, but got very little relief. The attacks were so bad that I was often confined to my bed helpless for weeks and months at a time. Governor Ansel has refused to grant a pardon to Clarence Thrailkill, of Saluda county, who is now serving a three years' sentence for manslaughter. It will be recalled that young Thrailkill and his father, Morgan Thrailkill, killed young Ben Burton at Monetta two years ago. The son was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to serve three years on the county chaingang. % ^ A Sandy Iron Cleaner. You can make a very practical little contrivance for use onaroningday, says The Delineator for January. It consists of a block of wood about five inches square. Five holes are bored in this block and filled with beeswax. These are covered with a piece of muslin. The other side of the block is covered with emery-cloth. The emery side of the block is used to rub the iron on if the starch sticks, and the wax side gives the iron smoothness. The first lynching of 1908 occurred oil Thursday at Brookhaven, Miss., when a negro was shot to death by an enraged mob. The negro had killed a policeman. i A little girl in Charleston while attending a Christmas tree had* her clothing to catch fire and she. was burned so badly that she will die from the injury.
