Wednesday, December 18.1907. Simple Lives Are The Best. "People in the cities sneer at the small towns, but there are worse ^n?no Wa li'vinof in n am nil jpiavvyj* ?i v; j^/a v*v# a* i - aaa * w?a?%?*a town, where the people will sympathize with yon if yon are in trouble, and if you haven't any trouble they will hunt it up for you." The editor of a certain paper writes this, and many will agree with" him, though some take exception to the last sentence. People who live in small towns, people who lead siipple lives, people who live as people in the city never knew how to live, are sympathetic, warm-hearted, always ready to reach out helping hands to those who need them. We remember a story which appeared in the papers, perhaps a month ago, about the dying woman who was' left two weeks on a park bench in New York. On a bench in Madison Square. Think of it! A woman dying of consumption, so weak that she was unable to walk, so ill that she was dying. A man who had noticed her sitting there telephoned the Department of Charities and several hospitals, and after repeated refusals, finally prevailed upon the authorities of one hospital to send an ambulance for the dying woman. The ambulance came ?it was too late! The woman w^s dead. , Would' this have happened in a country village? Never. Country people are not of this sort; if one of tneir number falls ill, an endless procession of friends come and go, carrying flowers, delicacies and cheering words to thd invalid. When the sick person recovers, everybody is glad and congratulations are showered upon him. If grim death comes, there are loving hands to perform the last sad offices, to place flowers upon the casket and to mingle tears with the bereaved ones. This is what people in country villages do. In citie9 we have seen funerals and receptions going on under the same roof. In. apartment houses, hotels and rooming houses nobody cares much whether anybody else lives or dies; hearts grow as hard as the granite stones that pave the city's streets. Oh, frenzied city people, how kittle you know of the meaning of peace and of the eternal verities of reasonable enjoyment that come of living in a village! . > To journey through country lanes; to see the tendpr 9tars shine down from the summer heavens; to hear the whisper of the winds blowing across the meadows and fields; to hear the purlings of busy little brooks; to hear the innumerable voices of nature, translated by the children's tones and the song of birds; to feel that you are a [WTIl Ui U&bUTC D OCli) poill VI lunvivon Bind rills and streams, is to enter into nature's heart, and realize that you are a part thereof; that yon have kinship to every tree; that jjou are re- j Lated to eVery animal that moves, to. svery stone that lies by a wayside; that yon are intimate with everything that lives and breathes. All these go to makeup the life of the men and women and childrn who live in country (Tillages. v The people who live in country towns?they are of the world'* best. ?Atlanta Georgian and News. ' Good Cough Medicine for Children. The season for coughs and colds is low at hand and too much care cannot t>e used to protect the children. Strong is attempting to i have a guardian. appointed for her j brother, J. Marcus Boorman. She | says that Boorman is insane and inca- j pable of caring for himself or his property. Twenty-five years ago Boor- ! man, then a prominent lawyer with a small fortune, married Miss Emily Fowler of Yonkers. Within a month the wife died. For months after the funeral the neighbors saw nothing of Boorman. He gave up his law practice and remained inside his bouse, the blinds of which were closed tightly. In all the years since then Boorman has been out of the house only a few times. On Nov. 18 a policeman saw Boorman standing on the steps of his house. As the officer approached he fell in a faint. Doctors said he was suffering from worry and lack of nourishment. An old friend went to Boorman's house and what he saw there surprised him. The room in which Mrs. Boorman died 25 years ago remains in the state in which she left it. Even the depression in the pillow where her head had rested is there, a withered carnation lies on the dresser and a sewing basket rests where she left it. ^ .
