Tie price of cotton is beginning to
roll upwards. Now is the time for
tenners to "stick" together. "United
we stand; divided we fall."
^JSon. John Sharpe^ Williams, of

great minority leader in congress.
m:- The election was unanimous and no
^ t ' better selection could have been made.
3tr. Williams Is a great leader and
one of the finest debaters in the
national house.
jfe; . J. B? Reeves, head of several cotton,
warehouses in Georgia, has departed
with over a hundred thousand <
dollars belonging to farmers. It is
said that be sold over a thousand bales i
of cotton left in bis warehouses by
farmers who were holding for fifteen
cents. The "holding" movement is
. not popular with Georgia farmers just i

The announcement that our own ^
Asbarywillnot.be a candidate for
the United States Senate next year
will be hailed with genuine delight by
--the many friends of this popular and
distinguished young congressman.
Do matter how much the people of 1
his district would like to see him pro- 1
mo ted, yet they feel that they cannot 1
afford to lose ms able services in the 1
(lower uuutstj.
North Augusta, a suburb of Augusta,
Ga., is trying for a dispensary at that
place.4* Georgia goes dray" after Jan.
1st, and no doubt a number of Angus- 1
tans are behind the project. The 1
matter is now before the dispensary 1
board of Aiken county, and their final 4
decision in the matter will be awaited
with keen interest by the people of
that section, it is to be hoped, how- ,
ever, that the board will decide adversely
to the promoters.
Several candidates are already an- |
nonncing their intentions to run for
the judgeship, made vacant by the?
resignation of Judge Aldrich. Among \
the number we nptice the name of i
Capt^Claude B. Sawyer, formerly of
this county, but now a resident of (
Aiken. Capt. Sawyer no doubt would i
make an able judge, if elected, aud it .
is claimed that he will have a strong I
following. 1
The first day of January, 1908, will j
be heralded with delight by tbe mill I
operatives in Soath Carolina.* On that <
date the ten hour law goes into effect, 5
and their rejoicing will not be with- 1
out cause. "Mill- hands have had to .
work too many hours all along. Ten 1
hours a day, especially the way they
. " work in mills, is long enough for any
body to work, and we congratulate .
our mill friends in advance of the happy
change.
This is the time of year when every 1
body should meet their obligations as ?
far as possible. We have made our
usual fall trip over the county with 1
the result that we have made thq- .1
poorest collections that we have ever
made in the history of our business, ?
Newspaper * men have their obligations
to meet as well as other people,
and we hope that subscribers and ad- t
vertigers will realize this fact?not ]
only in word, but indeed. We want I
the "CASH" and we don't deny it. I
We need it in our business and unless
those subscribers and advertisers who
have not paid during the year, do so
at an early date, their names will be
|: cancelled from our books. This we
dislike to do; it will not afford us any
* pleasure we assure you, so don't wait
for your paper to stop, but send the
money now. We want it understood
that we want nothing but prompt
paying subscribers.
Senator Louis Appelt, editor of the
Manning Times, do not think that the
legislature would be acting wise in
passing a State prohibition at the
coining meeting of that august assem'Q
bly. He thinks, on the ocher hand,
that it should be left to the voter* of
the State next summer to say whether
or not they want such a law. To this
we disagree; the people of South Carolina
have already, decided that ques- 1
tion. it tne majority 01 me voters
wanted prohibition some fifteen years {
ago, where is the man that would
deny that a still greater majority are <
in favor of it now? The prohibition
wave has struck the whole country, (
and right here, in South Carolina, the
people want such a law passed, and
we firmly believe that there will be
sfe enough members in the legislature at
the comiDg session to give the people ]
what the}' have asked for and what
they have been wanting for lo, these 1
many years. Use your best efforts to
give us an ironclad straightout prohi- <
bition law, Mr. Appelt, and genera'
tions yet unborn will rise up and call 1
you blessed.
