Taylor, Secretary of the South Carolina Cotton Seed Crushers Association, offering three prizes amounting t^$50.00 for the three best comDositionPto be written by South Carolina school children. The subject is "The Uses of Cotton Seed Products." * The contest is open to all school children of South Carolina and will no doubt bring forth many uses of cotton seed meal and cotton oil not now generally known. The treatment of the subject is left entirely with the teachers or the scholars of the schools. Mr. Taylor expects many of the contestants to treat of the uses of cotton seed meal as a food for horses or for cows or for other stock, and at the same time many will write on the varied uses of the oil as a cooking fat, as an edible and as a household remedy. The best composition from each of the schools throughout the state will be selected and s^^tn to. the committee of judges. The awarfT Will be made early in February, as the compositions must all be sen tin before the first of that month. It is believed that much interest will be taken in this contest. Every mother should encourage her boys and girls to compete on such occasions. This saying was more familiar to the former than to the present generation, but comparatively few people know its origin. 1 An Indian and a white man who were hunting together killed a crow and a turkey. The white man said to the Indian, "You may take the crow and I'll take the turkey, or I'll take the turkey and you may have the crow." The Indian replied, "May be alright but you don't say turkey to me once." ?St. Louis Republic. How Her Life Was Saved When Bitten By A Large Snake. How few people there are who are not afraid of snakes. Not long ago a harmless little garter snake fell on the wheel of an automobile which was being driven by a woman. The woman ppomptly fainted and the car, left to its own resources, ran into a stone wajl and caused a serious accident.. The bite of a poisonous snake needs prompt attention. Mrs. K. M. Fishel, Route No. 1, Box 40,' Dillsburg, Pa., tells how she saved her life when bitten by a large snake. "On Anomflfc 29. 1906. I was bitten on the hand twice by a large copperhead snake. Being a distance from any medical aid, as a last resort I used Sloan's Liniment, and to my astonishment found it killed all pain and was the means of saving my life. I am the mother of four children and am never without your Liniment.'' Publishers Bit Bard. The paper manufacturing trust has raised the price of newspaper twenty per cent. In fact the cost of all materials, except brains, used in making newspapers has been very materially increased. Some publishers advise a reduction in the sizes of the larger journals, while others think an increase in subscription the wiser way to do. Both sides agree that the delinquent subscriber should willingly and promptly pay his dues and thereby help publishers to be more independent in tone and less dependent on the advertiser.?-Exchange.
