Newberry College Notes.
It is near the middle of the first f
term and all the new boys have taken S
on the ways of college life. <
Newberry has always stood high in e
pure and clean athletics and in the *)
South Carolina Intercollegiate Term's ;
Tournament held at Greenville last ''
week, our boys put up a goojd fight J
and came second in the race, Jttrs&ine >j
finally winning out. >
The two literary societies have estab- ;;
lished a gold medal to be awarded }
that Sophomore who declaims best,
The contest will be held on" Morning 3
of Commencement week. The con- ?
testants are practicing their declama- <
tions daily under the efficient supervision
of Prof. Thomas We feel sure <
that it "frill be a great success.
But one holiday will be given Thanksgiving,
as college exercises were sus- J,
gended from Wednesday to Friday of i
air week. The students appreciate
a day off and many of them will spend
this time at home.
On the 29th of this month a preliminary^eontest
will be held for the
purpose of electing an orator to rep- I
resent Newberry College at the Intercollegiate
Oratorial contest at Greenwood
next April. The contestants ;
from the Excelsior are E. H. Rawl, >
F. W. Cappelmann and F. S. Long :
and those from tie Phrenakosmian i
are B. E. Petrea, T. H. Hill and B. V.
Sease, who are members of the pre- $
sent senior class. This contest
promises j to be one of the best the ;
college has ever had. H.'

All Violators Will 1)8 Puaisied .
Atlanta, Ga.?All violators of the r*
state prohibition law in Georgia will ^
find a chain gang sentence confront- ^
ing them if the view s of Governor ^
Hoke Smith are carried out. This
much was evidenced by the action of
the chief executive when he declined J3
to sanction atpresent the recommendations
of the pardon board which 5*
were for the commutatitn of parties ^
who had been convicted of the illegal
sale of whiskey.
Governor Smith has often in his .
speeches declared that the only way n
to supress the illegal sale of whiskey
in Georgia was by sentencing offend- *
ersto the chain gang. The recom- J*
mendations that Governor Smith has ?
held up were for T. R. Varnadoe, of ?
Dooley county, and Minnie Ramsey, r
of Stephens county.
' Sunday Lav Enforced.
Albuquerque, N. M., Nov. 21?Sun- a
day without a newspaper, no street cars
to ride on, no telephone or telegraph
service, no tobacco, confection?ary
or soda water on sale, and no
open saloons, are conditions that will T
exist in Albuquerque if the court
holds the present Sunday law is con- IV:
stitutioual. The matter is now being
tested in the courts.
