PROCLAMATION. STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA,' EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT. Whereas, Petitions signed by more than one-third of the qualified elec tors of those portions of Orangeburg and Lexington Counties proposed to be cut off to form the new county (commonly known as Calhoun Gounty) and embraced in the following lines, bo wit: Beginning "in Lexington County on the Congaree River at a point where the land line between lands of C. M. Cromartie and Vandy jSp^rs strikes said river and running the land line between said parties (Cromartie is in and Speers is out of the new county) crossing the state road on this same, Land line, continuing straight line 125 chains to. a pine on the. Pine Plain road, thence South twenty-one and a half, west sixteen and one-half chains to pine on same road. And whereas the boundaries of the roposed new county, the [number of nhabitants. the taxable property, as hown by the last tax returns, and that be preposea lines do not run nearer than ight miles to any court-house now stablished, are also set forth in said etition And whereas the report of the comlission appointed by me to ascertain ic facts as provided for in the Acts of )0o as to whether the requirements of le constitution as to area, distance, ealth, population, et cetera, have been implied with, has been filed, stating j that the law had been fully complied ^ with, and the number of square miles in the proposed new county (commonly known as Calhoun County) is a little over four hundred and twenty-six (426) square miles, leaving- to the county of Orangeburg more than five hundred (500) square miles and to the county of Lexington more than five hundred (500) square miles. Now therefore, I, F. Ansel, as Governor of the State of South Carolina, \ by virtue of the power conferred upon I me by the Constitution and Laws of this State, do hereby order j 1. That an election be held in the territory embraced within the proposed new county on the 17th day of December A. D. 1907, upon the question of creating ] the said new county, and that, at such election, the qualified electors within the proposed area shall be allowed to vote upon said question, those favoring . the proposed new county to vote "Yes" and those opposed,to vote "No". 1 2. That the Commissioners of State and County Elections of the Counties of Orangeburg and Lexington respectively shall make all necessary arrangements for holding said election, shall appoint managers and do all other things necessary for the holding of said election; that the County Supervisors of the said counties respectively shall have prepared printed tickets and furnish same to the Commissioners of Election to be sent out i to the Managers of Election for the use of the voters. 3. That at the said election the ques- * tion of a name and a county seat for such county shall also be submitted to the said qualified electors. J 4.
