The great Sfcate FAir is on and Co- " lum&ia extends a genuine Southern hospitality and welcomes the people ol the entire State/ It is a fit time and occasion fora holiday - for the capital city and the festival spirit is in the air. The banners streaming from the windows telling of the shows and the circus, the lights athwart the V- streets, the clang of the car bell and the unwonted throngs of visitors on the streets all tell of fair week, and T all are in a perfect spirit of glee and jollity. The farmers especially, having made and harvested a big crop, g | are there ioi their annual vacation and-a good time. Ocd. Wm. Elliott, general superintendent, tells us he has put in new . tracks and put on new cars, so as to U Ll| give better and quicker schedules from the city to the Fair grounds, and xj that because of these extraaccommoHI' dations, t^e fare will be ICi .cents as a gfc other years. The programmes for the balance of g v the week, including the races, foot ? ball and fox chaees, will be very interesting. The "grand finale" will come on Saturday when the big circus will draw in to the city the colored con- . tangent. We are pleased with the successful management of the State Fair, as it has two of Lexington's prominent / and. progressive citizens at its head, a G. A. Guignard, as President, and . Senator D. F. Efird, as General Mana- if ger. They certainly deserve credit, aS the former has held his position ii for several years, while the latter has held his office for a longer term 1< wfehganeral satisfaction to all conj cernea, and We are informed that, s perhaps, after the present Fair it will he entirely out of debt. Our County Fair closed last Thursday, and the officials feel compliment- | ed over the grand success, having had I the largest attendance and most ex- 1 hibits of any Fair held heretofore. It was estimated that between three, and four thousand visitors were on the grounds Wednesday. A cute trick, however, was played upon us which was so good, and v caused such a merry laugh by the C 2%" \ party present, that we concluded to make a note of it. Of course we were \ invited to join in a social, unharmful glass, and being a temperance man, our choice was ginger ale; another of r the party, high up in social politics V and a very prominent gentleman, ( chose the same, but with a spike in it. v In our general, jovial and happy conversation, glasses were changed on . Us, and we took the one with the spike v x After drinking, we were asked how we liked that ginger ale. - T7e answered, fine. S. court in Columbia. The police are vigilant in Columbia.
