On September 25th Newberry college began the 52nd year of its career with the most encouraging prospects in its history. Two hundred and fifty students were enrolled and more are coming in every day. This is the Inrcrpst. nnmhpr that has ever been en -*- & T rolled at an opening in the college's history. Chief Justice Pope made the opening address in which he impressively urged the young men and women to make the best of their opportunities so that they may be more able to successfully fight the battles of life He extended a hearty welcome to the old and new students. Other addresses of welcome were made by the different ministers of Newberry. The Senior class this year is the largest the college has ever sent out, numbering thirty-one; seven of which are from Lexington county. The people of Lexington are proud of'this institution-ana are giving it their loyal rapport in every way possible. She sends her fall quota of students again this year, there being twentyfive representatives of Lexington. Students have come from every part of South Carolina, while we have a number of representatives of Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. This but shows how ! Newberry has grown in a few years. May she continue to grow and become more efficient to perform the great duty of uplifting mankind. H. Preparations were being made \o inflict summary punishment when the child's father intervened. The negro was dragged from the wagon in which he had been placed preparatory to removing him to jail, and fell under the wheels, sustaining a broken leg. He was taken later to jail.
