The Tri-County fair will open up at
Batesbnrg on next Tuesday, the 15th. j
This fair will be largely attended by
the people from all over the State, 1
and Batesbnrg will open wide her
gates to the stranger. Her citizens, ^
at great expense, have-made arrange- ,
ments to care for everybody and the
fair is bound to be a success.

the citizens of Lexington county who
are interested in improving the Old *
State road, leading through Hogabok ]
swamp, to meet at the' post office in
I New Brookland. %next Saturday, the
12th. The,call explains itself and reveals
to the public the wretched con- I
ditton of the roads in that part of the
county, and the little attention they
receive from the people generally.
Gov. Ansel refused to recognize the
request of Solicitor Timmerm&n and
Judge Dsntzler in the matter of the
two gamblers who were sentenced at 1
the last term of court to serve three,
months in the county jail, at the expense
of the taxpayers. The Solicitor
and Judge asked that the sentence be j
commuted to a fine, but the Gov.
says they must serve their time in
The State NSir will begin on Oct.
28th and dose on November 1st
Columbia is making great preparation
for the entertainment of visitors
and a royal good time is in store for
those who go. The Colombia merchants

Mrs. C. R. Rish, who has been confined
to "her bed for sometime with
fever, is able to be up and about
again.
Mr, N. N. Scoffill left last Monday
for the Mediedl College of Charles;
ton, where he goes to resume his
studies. We wisn for him the success
he deserves.
The trustees of this place have
elected *Prof. C. W. Stuckey, of
Clydes, S. C., to teach this season,
fe Prof. Stnckey is a graduate of the
pedagogical department of the University
of South Carolina, and comes
highly recommended. School will
?open next Monday.
Last Sunday a Sunday school was
? - organized at Smith Branch school
" house. Mr. Drayton E. Clark was
elected superintendent.
Mr. S. E. Berry has purchased a
house and lot at this place, and it is
rumored tnaL ne is going u>% open up
business at an early date.
The trustees of Smith Branch school
have elected Miss Ethel Lawrence, of
Sumter, S. C., to teach their school
this season. She comes highly recommended
and no doubt the trustees
^ have made a wise selection.
The civil engineers surveying the
lines of the proposed new county of
Edisto, passed through this section
last weea. More time and money
wasted. v
Mrs. E. E. Felder and her daughter,
Miss Tressie, have been visiting

residing on Mr. F/ed Harman's place,
several miles above here, was arrested
last week upon the charge of shooting
into a mail box while returning
from Columbia a couple of weeks ago.
