Negro Assaults White Girl on
Boat.
Pittsburg, Pa., Sept. 24.?Florence
Boone, 12 years old, a passenger on
the steamer Woodruff from Greensboro,
Pa., to this city, her home, was
brutally assaulted by a negro employe
of the boat today and is at her home
in a serious condition. The child had
been visiting relatives at Greensboro
and started yesterday for Pittsburg.
During the night the negro, whose
name is withheld, broke into her
stateroom and struck her on the head
with a nntato masher. The eirl was
rendered unconscious. , Later her
screams attaeted the attention of the
boat's officers. Before they could
realize the situation, however, the
negro struck the child again. The
officers in charge of the boat held the
negro a prisoner in the lower portion
of the steamer until this city was
reached. While the mate was telephoning
for the police the negro escaped
from the deck hands.
The negro is known here, it is said,
and the authorities hope to capture
him. The assault caused a panic
among the passengers.
Wealthy Quakeress Dead.
Philadelphia, Pa.,?Anna T. Jeanes,
the philanthropic Quakeress, who gave
$i,000,000 last April for the education
of negroes in the south died at
the Friends Boafding Home in this
city, aged 85 years.
Miss Jeanes leaves an estate estimated
at from $3,000,000 to $5,000,000.

Farmers Making Good Headway.
Although labor is scarce, the farmers
have been making fairly good
headway in getting out their cotton
and the'gins all over the county have
been, and are still rushed to meet the
situation. We see it stated, in some
of our exchanges, that when the cotton
now being picked is out, it -will be
all of the crop, as there is no August
crop worth speaking of.

which they create makes one feel joyful.

The Money Question.
The stringency of the money situation
has been relieved by the National
government's aid to the banks. At
one time it was thought there would
be trouble in securing sufficient money
.to handle the present cotton crop,
but that this is/no longer a question
of doubt, the merchants and bankers
will re9t ease for another year, at
least, and business will progress niceiy

How to Cure a Cold.
The question of how to cure a cold
without unnecessary loss of time is one
in which we are all more or less interested,
for the quicker a cold is gotten
rid of the less the danger of pneumonia
and other serious diseases, x Mr.
B. W. L. Hall, of Waverly, Va., has
used Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for
years and says: 44I firmly believe
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy to be
absolutely the best preparation on the
market for colds. I have recommended
it to my friends and they all agree
with me." For sale by The Kaufmann

Quinsy, Sprains and Swellings
Cured.
"In November, 1901, I caught cold
and had the quinsy. My throat was
swollen sol could hardly breathe. I
applied Chamberlain's Pain Balm and
it gave me relief in a short time. In
two days I was all right," says Mrs. L.
