On the 10th day of September, A. D. 1907, however, I tried ? to vote in the General Election, but ( was denied. Last year George A. < Rawl, registered number 303, tried to j vote and was denied. Therefore, be- < fore I started to this election I hunted ^ up and found two registration certifi- <; cates. Armed with these and. last r year's tax receipt, am able to read any section of the constitution, it # cannot be proved that I practice mis- ' cegenation or niggeralism, (which, under the new constitution, disfranchises any white-skinned man), am \ also free-born and of lawful age, and, i except with members of the court i house ring and its tribularies, under ] the tongue of good report, I thought J I had a right to vote. I don't some r times vote in the General Election, j but in this election I wanted to vote > against trimming Lexington county x to make another court house ring, but t there was a greater reason why I i wanted to vote and that was I wanted ] to vote against cutting school dis- ~] tricts number 6 and 7 and ruining them to make a little political school ring, a branch of the court house ring and fasten an extra tax on my property and posterity. I, with a few . hundred others, voted against that J very thing in last year's primary and ] won, but William and Brooks both ^ went back on us. ( My registration number is 124, but when Killian Hook, Charlie Living- j ston and his son-iii-law kindly let me ' examine the registration book behold "William Albert'* was written opposite 124. Now, if there ever was a s voter in Hollow Creek township by the name of "William Albert," I fail j to find any one who ever heard of ( him, and I have asked many. Regis- j tration number 303, George A. Rawl j and 304, R. B. Rawl, has heavy red j lines run through them, but no oth- t era, as I could see, had been stricken < out. A note to the right, on the same ( leaf, explained that 303 and 304 was ] illegal, or had been entered illegally, ] or something to that effect, but nobody's name is signed to that explanatory note. Now, unless it is proved that there is, or ever was, a "William Albert" [ in Hollow Creek township, I am com- ] pelled to write FRAUD. Unless the writer of that explanatory note in J registration book comes out like a man and tells the citizens of Lexington county that he wrote it and explains the illegality of 303 and 304, I . will again write FRAUD. ( If there is or was such a man as . "William Albert," why was his name nln/Wl nnnoaifce 124 and mine left out. * even if tfie book had been transcribed a dozen times? What is a registra- < tion ticket for any how if it does not protect thp voter in his inalienable < right to vote? It appears to me that a registration certificate is the only ^ safeguard against fraud, because the books are in divers different hands? invariably in the hands of the court house ring?and they can easily alter or change to suit themselves. ] I appeal to the people of Lexingtofi i county to help me redress the great ' w rong iipposed upon me and mine in ' being all disfranchised. It is an index to the wonlerfui growth of the community. A ;ew years ago there was not enough business for one bank; now there is a jreat demand for two. Almost all the credit for the organisation of this bank is due to Hon. E. f. Etheredge, who is a moving spirit n his community. Ansel for Shep Taylor, i young colored boy sent to the reformatory for 10 years from this county in 1905 for arson. j It will be recalled that the boy was locked up n the guard house at Leesville for lighting and during the night set fire jO the building. The boy was then >nly 12 years old. He tells the Governor he is repent ent now and will nake a man of himself if he will give lim his freedom. - \ Of laterest to tfaay.
