A., Charleston, S. C. G. P. A., Atlanta, Ga. i \ t The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, September 18,1907. Lexington County Farmers' Union. To the Editor of The Dispatch: The Lexington County Farmers' Union met witn tne iocai union at Hilton on September 7th. It was one of the best meetings in the history of the Union, representatives from every local union in the county being present. The meeting was called to order by President S. J. Clark, who makes4 a splendid presiding officer. After going into secret session and transacting business before the body, Mr. J. B. O'neall Holloway addressed those present. His address was timely and to the point. The ladies of Hilton furnished a fine picnic with refreshments, which, to say the least, was grand in every particular. After dinner Prof. Holloway made a public address on Union doctrine, after which the union went into secret session. There were three resolutions passed and ordered published: 1st. That we endorse the action of the National Union in placing the minimum price of cotton at 15 cents per pound. 2nd. That we pledge ourselves not to sell a single bushel of cotton seed for less than ?1.25 per hundred. 3rd. That this Union now in session return its thanks to Prof. Holloway for his very much appreciated address. Now, fellow farmers of Lexington County, you see we are a part of the three million of unjon members in America, who are'"contending for their rights. Just watch us now and see if we don't get our demands! There is nothing under the sun to cause cotton to s^l for less than 15 cents, though there be a large crop, for the mills are short and must have the cotton; furthermore, there is a great demand for cotton goods and the mills have contracted month's ahead. The price of cotton goods have advanced; so much so that the mills could easily .afford to pay 20 cents for cotton and make large profits. As to cotton seed: If you do not get $1.50 per.-hundred you are not getting your share of profit. Just stop and think for a moment. Cotton seed per ton makes 40 gallons of oil worth 45 cents, equals $18; 1200 lbs. of meal, wprth $1.40, equals $16.80; 500 lbs. hulls, worth 60 cents, which equals $3. Add these together and you will have a total of $37.80. The mills are giving $1 per hundred for -- "" * *- A 1??i. o>a seea ana it casus auuuu ft w wuvcm into oil, meal and hulls. Seed per ton $20, manufacturing $4, total cost $24. Take $24 from $37.80 and it. leaves a clear profit of $12.60. Can't you see, Mr. Farmer? Mr. Farmer, let me whisper in your ear. Just hold your cotton and cotton seed for 15 cents and $1.25 and see if you will not be profited thereby. The Union is becoming stronger and stronger every day and if you, Mr. Farmer, want to compensate your wife and children for their labor, who toil from early morning until late at night, write Mr. Jas. B. Addy, Peak, S. C., what day to meet you and he will put you in the right road. We need every loyal father and son who till the soil. C. W. SMITH, Sec. Pro Tern. Ballentine, Sept. 14.
