Clinkscales of Wofford College, Spartanburg, is the most recent avowed candidate for Senator Latimer's seat in the United States senate. The article speaks for <1 J itself and reveals a grave state of ? affairs, so far as the roads of our g county are concerned., The time is fc ripe for all our people, irrespective of location, to take up the matter of good roads. Lexington county is a g * prosperous old county?the most pros- o perous in the State, from a financial jpoint of view, but is far behind many v ^ of her sister counties in her roads. The people, as a whole, need "wak- ? ing up" on this all-important ques- J ' tion. If every man in the county will p do his part the roads of Lexington will soon be the equal of any roads in J any county in the State. We believe a in being conservative, but better f 1 roads must- come at any cost. b . _ J Lexington County is now "fatten- * . ing" two men who acknowledged that . they were guilty of gambling. Judge c , Dantzler sentenced these men at the \ last term of court tov serve three i months in the Lexington county jail, ^ ^ t nvi/? KTT +VH3 oVlOriff C I'U UC 1CU auu Oai cu 1U1 UJ uuu ' Such a sentence was unheard-of in the annals of the county, and Judge Dantzler has since received no little amount of criticism for being so generous to these prisoners, who should 1 now be "doing time" on the public 3 roads of the county, instead of being 3 "fattened" at the expense of the tax-payers. .-Solicitor Timmerman, having the best interests of the county at heart, has asked- Governor Ansel k to commute the sentence of thes6 " men to a fine. Judge Dantzler has fc likewise appealed to tne governor to " commute the sentence to a fine. Just what the governor will do about the matter is not known, but surely he r will, for the good of the county, ac' cede to the Solicitor's request. . 5 ? S ? Death. of Krs., Crout, Mrs. Lizzie Crout, widow of the late Uriah Crout, died at the home of Mr. j John P. Corley, near Lexington, on . Saturday morning last, in ,her 84th year. She was buried on Sunday in - the old Drafts burying ground, the e last sad rites being performed by the g Rev. W. H. Hiller, of Lexington. Mrs. Crout was a most estimable woman, her whole life having been spent in doing good. She was a, conI sistent member of the Lutheran A church. ? * m ?
