GOOD BYE BOOZE.
Prohibitionists Win in Chesterfield
Election by Heavy Majority?Church
Bells Tolled.
Cheraw, Aug. 13.?All indications
point to a victory for the anti-dispensaryites
in the election held in Chesterfield
today on the question of dis
pensary or no dispensary. There are
twenty boxes in the county and out of
these seventeen have been heard from,
with the following votes reported:
180 against and 188 for, a total of 669.
Three small boxes have not been heard
from, but they will not materially
:hange the result. The dispensary
people will at once serve notice of a
contest. Hon. W. P. Pollock, formerly
a strong dispensary leader in the
BLouse of Representatives, has been
employed by the dispensary faction
o take charge of the contest, and he
vill leave Cheraw tonight for Colum>ia
where he will file his protest. The
ride he represents claim that the elec;ion
was illegal in every particular?
;hat the boxes - were not properly
abelled, that citizens not qualified
electors were allowed to vote; that
lome registered voters were not
iliOWea to vote anu some non-regiaored
voters were allowed to vote.
Between 10 and 11 o'clock this mornng
the church bells in Cheraw and
lome through the county were tolled
o signify the passing of the dispeniary.

A Little Boy Tells All Se
Snows.
"Girls is a queer kind of varmint,"
svrofce the little boy at school who had
seen ordered to write an essay on
prls. "Girls is the only thing that
las their own way every time. Girls
s of several thousand kinds, and
sometimes one girl can be like several
thousand otner gins, 11 sne wants you
X) do anything.
"Girls Is all alike one way?they
ire all like cats. If you rub 'em the
ight way of the hair they'll purr
ind look sweet at you, but if you rub
em the wrong way they'll claw you.
3'long as you let a girl have her own
vay she's nice and sweet; but just
iross her, and she'll spit at you
vorse than a cat.
"Girls is also like mules?they'rs
leadstrong. If a girl doesn't want to
>elieve anything, you can't make her.
If ahe knows it's so she won't say so.
Girls is little women, if they're good;
and if they ain't good then nor when
they get big, they're vixens?that's
what father said mama was once,
when she chased him round the kitchen
with a red-hot poker, 'cause she
was mad at him.
"Brother Joe says be doesn't like
big girls, but he does like little ones;
and when I saw him kissing Jennie
Jones last Sunday, and told him what
he'd said he said he was biting her,
'cause he didn't like her. I think he
hurt her, for she hollered and run,
and there was a big red spot over
both of her cheeks.
"This is all I know about girls, and
father says the less I know about 'em
the better off I am."
Sat on Tack and Spoke.
Utica, N. Y., Aug. 15.?That a man
may quickly recover his lost speech
by sitting on a tack was illustrated
last night in the case of Edward Cox,
of Williamstown, who found the painful
experience a blessing in disguise.
Months ago he suffered a stroke of
paralysis that left him speechless.
The doctors thought a blood clot had
formed near the brain and they said
that Mr. Cox would never recover the
use of his speech. A carpet tack did
what medical science failed to do?
brought back the lost voice of Mr.
Cox and gave him speech as fluent as
in the days before he was stricken
dumb. The tack was on a chair, point
upwards, and Mr. Cox sat upon it last
night with such force that the surprise
and pain brought to his lips a
fnrcefnl exclamation. A moment af
terwards his wrath changed to joy
when he discovered he had regained
the power of speech. The doctors
say it is a permanent cure.
The Limit of Life.
The most eminent medical pcicntists
are unanimous in the conclusion that
the generally accepted limitation of
human life is many years below the attainment
possible with the advanced
knowledge of which the race is now
possessed. The critical period, that determines
its duration, seems to i>e between
50 and 60; the proper care of the
body during this decad - caunot be too
strongly urged; carelessness the being
fatal to longevity. Nature's best helper
after 50 is Electric Bitters, the scientific
tonic medicine that revitalizes every
organ of the body. Guaranteed by the;
Kanfmann Drug Co., uod Derrick's

Labor Problem Serious Hatter
is Chester.
Chester, Aug. 15.?The matter of locating
immigrants in the county has
not been given up. All here do not
believe in immigration; in fact, some
of onr leading and best citizens are
opposed to this, bnt, on the other
hand, there are many who believe
that in immigration lies the salvation
of the labor question. Farmers who
have been questioned about the subject
assert that the matter of labor to
work the farms is becoming a serious
one.

lafcure ought to take up the question
and see if some remedy couldn't be
provided. He stated that he had been
in the farming business for years and
that the labor situation was worse
now than it had ever been in his experience.
He remarked that he had
visited several of the towns lately and
that he had noticed many idle negroes
loafing about. He commented on the
fact that there appeared to be few
idle persons about Chester and was
told that the vagrant law was strictly
enforced here and that persons without
visible means of support were
given work on the county roads.?
