Dreher in a lengthy article, assails the position of this paper on the new comity question. His assertions, however, are as "diabolical" as the roads of Sandy Run. . In the first paragraph the doctor deals in personalities which are foreign to the issue, uncalled for and have no bearing on the case at all. We make the assertion, however, with a feeling of pardonable pride, that we are on as happy terms with everybody as is the dear doctor himself, and if we have, in the course of argument, struck a tender spot in the burning breast of this young "apostle" of new county information, which has caused him pain, anguish, and sleepless nights, as his article would lead one to imagine, we have done so by presenting cold, logical facts?facts Which the doctor himself cannot evade or cover up with his unlimited vocabulary and world of information in regard to new counties. We were "shrewd enough," says the doctor, "to stop with Saluda," r -4 which he claims is "the most expen8ive of the new counties.'' 'Why did he not tell us about Bamberg?" asks ?- the doctor. We have never questional the prosperity of Bamberg. Bu^iSy is Bamberg such a prosperous county? The doctor fails to tell the people why. She has a ref?ular - net work of railroads, and has numerous enterprises that pay the greater poison of the taxes which run that county. But where, in all the land, can you find another county so favorably situated? Surely Calhoun will not De, ana tne assertion uy une uuutor that Calhoun will be more favorably situated than Bamberg, seems as "diabolical" to us as the roads of ; Sandy Ban, which the doctor seems to harp to freely upon, and by so | doing, fool the people of that section into his proposed new county. Nobody knows better than the doctor himself why these roads are "diabolical." The people of Lexington . have always been economical; they have never joined the "high falutin" band that the doctor seems to have joined since he has cast his lot among the people of St Matthews. Lexington people have always been conservative, too much so in the matter of better roads we freely admit bat if the citizens of Sandy Bon wane the fine roads, which the people of St Matthews propose to give them if V they will only join their Calhoun oounty, they can secure them in Lexington comity, and at a much less expense. Better roads are coming and y the "diabolical" roads of Sandy Bun will not be overlooked by the officials of this coanty. The doctor, in his fanciful plea for the new county, calls attention to - Georgia, North Carolina, and Kentucky, and we are amazed; yea, sur5 prised, to find the doctor, the young "apostle" of new county information, who has time to cease ministering to the wants of the sick and dvina to look after the general welfare of the people of Sandy Run, stopping with .these States. We would not have V been surprised had he gone outside of the United States?to Switzerland, Italy, and France?where, it is said, good roads prevail. We still assert and reassert that the people of St. Matthews are working for 4'greed." Tell us, doctor dear,.if it is not a fact that the property owners, business Inen, bankers, and the doctors, (which takes you in), and every other citizen of the town, are not working for their own personal agrandizement. Be candid with yourself, doctor. 19 it not a fact, doctor, that your own practice will be benefitted? Is it not a notorious fact that your bank will be benefitted? Is not this a selfish purpose. But yet you tell us that all the men behind this scheme are working from a patriotic stand point?for the interest of noAnlo o+. Yes, you propose to build fine roads to your court house, so that these people may come to your town to do business with your merchants, bankers, and % doctors. Patriotic? God deliver us from such patriotism! The weekly papers are going to continue to fight such "diabolical" and contemptible schemes as the one laid out by our good friend. We have no selfish motive in this matter. The doctor says, and rightly so, that the people of Sandy Run never spend a sickle at Lexington court house, Columbia being their main business place. Is not our stand then, from the doctor's own point of view, a patriotic one? We heartily concur in the statement of the doctor that, "There is no need to indulge in personalities about this matter or friends to fall out." This is exactly where The Dispatch * - ?* " XL. We have already presented figures and facts and it is useless to repeat them now. We are ready to stand or fall by whatever the good citizens of Sandy Run may do in-this matter and feel sure that they^will vote as their conscience dictates regardless of the advice given by this young "apostle" of new county information with headquarters at St. Matthews. The noble women of Atlanta and throughout Georgia are enthusiastic in their efforts to aid the legislature to passvthe prohibition bill. Today fifty women are busy preparing lunches for those legislators favoring prohibition, so that it will not be necessary for them to leave until the bill is passed. The. leaders of prohibition declare that they will "sleep in their seats for the balance of the session unless the opponents yield to its passage.", God grant that their efforts may prove successful! \ We wonder if the editor of the St. Matthews Commercial Advance will be allowed to vote in the new county election? He says: "Have you ever thought that the editors of the "vote advising" papers have no vote in this election?" The editor of the aboyenamed paper is offering the most advice. Yes. Those enchanting and bewitching smiles and the soft echoes of the cooing, lonely dove, truly reaches deep down in the recesses of a lonely heart. But what about the audacious post cards, which leaves a fellow to wonder and ponder over, at the same time reminding him that "this worldis full of disappointments." We have been informed that the % new connty promoters have no objections to traveling the "diabolical" rbads of Sandy Ron, not even in this very hot weather. Of course this is all done for patriotic (?) purposes. Is it the Williamson plan, the favorable weather, or the up-to-dateness of the farmers that makes the prospect for one of the largest yields of corn in many years? Hotr?hotter?hottest. Farmers' Union Resolutions. Rosolution 8 adopted by Lexington county Farmers' Educational and Cooperative Union of America; in convention assembled at Piney Woods on the 20th day of July A. D. 1907:. Whereas, immigration as in South Carolina has been favored by a certain element, and we, as farmers, believe it to be detrimental to the cause of agriculture in this State. Therefore, be it resolved, 1st. That we, the Farmers' Educational and Cooperate Union of America, Lexington county No. 8, do ' hereby put our disapproval upon said Act, creating a bureau of immigration in this State, and, 2nd. That we do ask our Senator and Representatives from this county in the general assembly to use their utmost efforts to have said Act repealed. 3rd. That a copy of these resolutions be sent to each member of the delegation from this county in the general assembly and also to The Lexington Dispatch for publication. By order of Lexington county F. Smoak-HowelL The marriage of Miss Lillie Smoak, formerly of Lexington, but more recently of Columbia, the following account of which appeared in the Sunday State, will be read with interest by the many Lexington friends of the vounglady: I " "Wednesday evening at 8:30 o'clock the home of Dr. L. E. Smoak in Shandon was the scene of a pretty home wedding in which Mr. W. H. Howell of Atlanta, Ga., and Miss Lillie v. Smoak of Columbia were the contracting parties. It was a very quiet affair, there being no one present except a few relatives and friends. Rev. W. H. Greever, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church, performed the ceremony in a simple and impressive manner. Mr. Howell H a prominent young business man of Atlanta and is very highly esteemed. Miss Smoak is the eldest daughter of Dr. Smoak of this city.
