The facts and figures are before the people of the Sandy Bun section, who have been so unfortunate as to come within the scope of the new county ; promoters. There is no need for the self-designing schemers of this project to try to fool these good people by picturing all kinds of Deauurai I and, seemingly, impressive facts, which, in reality, are no more than a "bag of deception." Who, in the ' name of common-sense, would be so unfair, so prejudiced as to deny the paramount fact that taxes will be much higher in this same territory should the new county be formed? How can the people of Sandy Run expect to have their taxes lower in the new county, when at the present time land in Lexington county is assessed at one dollar and fifty cents per acre, while the land in Orange-, i burg, just across the line, is assessed at three dollars and fifty cents per acre? Judge for yourselves, gentlemen. Legitimate taxes must be raised to meet the necessary expenses of a county government, and certainly any. one must admit that it will re' quire more money, proportionately, to run small counties than large ones. It is claimed by the advocates that we have nothing to do with this matter. It is true we have no vote, but we have a voice, especially when others are going to get in trouble; and we are sure to be injured ourselves by +.h?fp mistakpf. We axe satisfied that the originators of this proposed new county will admit that the taxes are bound to be raised. Who but the taxpayers are going to pay the officers that are to , run this new county ? Who but the taxpayers are going to pay for a courthouse and jail? Who but the taxpayers are going to meet the many other necessary expenses that will as surely come as the day follows night? Who but the residents of the new county will pay for taransfering of real ." * estate deeds and other property? These are questions that should be seriously considered by the voters of Sandy Ron township before they cast their votes for the formation of this new county. $ _____ "i ? i jfc.. While in Columbia last week we made it a point to visit the market at ?;/ an early hour Friday morning to see what part Lexington farmers take in supplying the needs of Columbia's population in the way of vegetables p: -and produce. We found probably forty or fifty wagons loaded with various kinds of vegetables, chickens, .eggs, butter, etc.?every one of them from this county, with but few exceptions. We believe that fully threefourths of the vegetables and such like sold in Columbia at this season of - the year, are raised by Lexington farmers. This is saying much but it is an undisputed fact nevertheless. Farmers find ready sale for their produce in the capitol city and receive good prices for the same. Beans were bringing $1.00 per bushel; com 12>? cents per dozen; squash and cucumbers 10 to 15 cents per dozen; tomatoes 60 to 75 cents per peck; beets5 and 10 cents per bunch; grown and frying size chickens 30 to 60 cents a piece. The market seemed to be well stocked with cantelopes and muskmelons, but watermelons were scarce and of very poor quality. Richland's track business has grown considerably to what it used to be, the farmers of that county taking much greater interest in the truck raising industry. But Lexington still leads along this Jine, many of the growers of this comity making daily 'trips to Columbia. Most of them have regular customers and-supply them the year around. This pays much better than cotton as a money crop, and furnishes those engaged in the business with ready cash throughout the year. This brings us once more to the importance of having free bridges over the Congaree and Broad rivers. There is no estimating the immense value that would surely follow both to Lexington and Columbia. Something should be done to relieve the situation. At a meeting of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce several weeks ago, a committee was appointed to look after the matter, but nothing has yet been done so far as we know. Lexington and Columbia are greatly handicapped and their resources checked by these everlasting bridge tolls. What has the committee done? The corsetless woman?Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt. . fv . * The registration books of Ba rnwell county have not been revised in eleven years. We don't know how long it j has been since the registration books of this county have been revise d, but it is a well known fact that it has been several years. The law require s that boards of registration revise the books two weeks before every election, and Governor Ansel is going to ' see to it that the law is thoroughly complied with in every county in the State. It seems equally as hard to get indictments against violators of the county dispensary law as it was against those violating the State in-isi?A tf/vmov fi-ATipral LiVon M.IoUUUU) vuv ^Lvwxuwj ? don't fail to make the effort all the same. It is better to have tried and failed than to have not tried at all. Governor Ansel and Attorney General Lyon are making it "hot" for the dispensary violators.
