So Easily Avoided.
Thursday's daily papers contained
the following item:

Pearl Forrester, the ten-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Forrester,
of the Orr Mill village, died
this morning from lockjaw. She
steppedjon a nail about ten days ago
and several days ago the dreaded dis
ease took hold of her.

sad, when it might have been so easily
avoided. It is strange how few
people know that hot lye is an almost
certain preventative of tetanus. It
will not cure the disease, when it has
made headway through the system,
but if applied as soon as the wound is
inflicted it will prevent it.
If a wound, as soon as inflicted,
whether on man or beast, is soaked
in a mild solution , of concentrated
lye, or lye made by boiling ashes, as
hot as it can be endured, three or
four times a day for a couple of days,
no anxiety need be longer felt. There
is not a known instance of tetanus
having developed in man or horse
where hot lye has been applied in
time.
This is a simple preventative, so
simple that people pay no attention
to it. We have mentioned it before,
and do so again in the hopes of doing

Buraed Her Husband.
Scranton, Pa., July 3.?Mrs. Kindra
Howrsto, aged 18 years, of Dunmore,
is in the county jail, charged'with
having burned her husband to death,
that she might be free to marry her
former lover, Ignatz Hutro, who isalso
in jail, charged with being accessory.
The police say that Mrs. Howrsto
has confessed.
The woman got her husband drunk,
and when he was stupifled in bed, she
poured the oil from a lamp on the bed
and then she says the lamp dropped
on the bed, setting it afire.
At the sight of her husband roasting
and squirming in tjae flaming bed she
became horrow-stricken and rushed
from the house crying "fire." Neighbors
extinguished the flames and had
Howrsto sent to the hospital where
he died without regaining consciousness.
Tezas To Be Dry Ten Days.
Prohibition wilfe prevail in Texas

The new liquor law passed by the
last legislature provides that all
saloon licenses expire on July 12 and
that a period of 10 to 20 days must
elapse before the application for a
new license can be acted upon.
No saloon can remain open dnring
this period. The saloon men throughout
the state have agreed to take a
vacation for ten days while their applications
for new licenses are ^pending.

was horrified and, turning the pistol
upon himself, blew out his brains,
falling beside her corpse.
County Treasurer J. C. Randolph
stabbed to death on Tuesday a week
County Commissioner Andersou Burleson,
at Bakersville, Mitchell county,
N. C.
There were three suicides in Houston,
Texas, on Thursday of last week
two by morphine, the other with a
shotgun. All are attributed to the
excessive heat.

She was the daughter of Adam j
Smith, one of the pioneers of Lufcberaiiism
on the waters of Black Creek.

church. The deceased joined the
church in early life, but moving from
this part of Zion she connected herself
with Bethany E. V. church. Here
she was faithful, true and kind to the
end.
She leaves an aged husband with

world. They hope her rest is with
the people of God. Dear one, rest
thy task is over, thy work is done.
She was laid to rest in Bethany
grave yard.

A young fellow in Edgefield was
talking tenderly over the telephone
to his lady love the other day, and
during the gummy conversation, he
ardently called her his "star of hope."
The object of his heart's affections at
the other end of the line thought he
said "bar of soap," and grew very
indignant over the supposed rub, and
told him that she would never be
used to wash his socks, and if that
was what he expected he had better
look elsewhere for a "bar of soap,"

only one of the little tragedies of
life, and while the two are icily
frigid, there will come a sudden thaw
some day, and then all will be made
