Washington.?The bureau of statistics of the agricultural department estimates the everage condition of cotton as 72 per cent, as compared with 70.5 on May 25, 1907; 83.3. on June 25, 1906 ; 77 per cent, on the corresponding date in 1905 and a ten year average of 83.2. Hanna, son of Mark Hanna, nhin'a statesman, was married for the third time to Mrs. Mary Stuart, of Cleveland, Ohio, a divorced woman, recently. Friday before the marriage his second wife secured a divorce. His first wife got her divorce before he married the second. That is what the card players would call progressive marriage, with a rapid change of partners. How much better is that in a social and moral sense than a community that ignores marriage altogether? It is on a level with the immorcl negroes of the South who "take up" and live together until one or the other gets jtired of the partnership. They have an amicable separation and then "take up" with someone else. The vicious rich are just as bad and often worse than the ignorant and debased poor. Legislation has not reached the evil. The South Carolina method is decidedly best after all. Let not the State at any time enter into any sort of an agreement for a uniform divorce law, unless divorces are forbidden entirely. Smith, of Columbia, has been, elected assistant professor of English in the Sooth Carolina university to fill the place for Prof. Harry Davis,, who has been given a year's leave of absence to attend the Chicago universifev. Mr. Smith is a graduate of - - - ? Davidson and of the South Carolina university. The fiscal year closes with a surplus of $87,000,000 in Uncle Sam's treasury at Washington. Heavy buildings were jarred in Salt Lake, and windows were broken for miles around. A iocal passenger train was a quarter of a mile away.
