Mrs. Martin Porth, the wife of Mr. "*v ; Martin Porth, Sr. ,died Monday evening ?t her home above town at the advanced age of 84 years. There will be a basket picnic on Jnly 4th at Mathias' Mineral Springs, the famous ideal place for all such .gatherings. There will be two ball games, music and dancing during the oay. I Mr. Job Shumpert brought to our office yesterday nine rattles and a button, which came from a rattlesnake he killed last Saturday at the head of Scouter creek. The rattles are now on disDlav at The Dispatch office. * " Doing a Large Business. We are glad to learn that our young friend, Mr. Lowman Roof, is doing so -well at Chapin, this county. He runs a large turpentine still, buys and sells spirits in any form; jpays the highest S -market price at all times for dip. f _ r Executive Committee to Meet. Swansea, June 23.?Mr. Ed Williams of Brookland died on the Seaboard Air Line train going towards ' Savannah, just as it reached Swansea today. Mr. Williams was about 30 years old and had been in bad health for the last 20 years with heart trouble. (jk Just before the train reached Swansea he had a fainting spell and never recovered from the swoon.?The State, June 24. * A Popular Traveling IC&n. Mr. H. T. Wright, one of the most popular traveling men in South Carolina and a resident of Batesburg, was here on Monday. Mr. Wright is a strong believer in prohibition. His travels over the State, in the various counties, has given him a clear insight into the workings of the county dispensary and prohibition. He says the towns that have no dispensary are by far the best?the merchants do a much larger business, and the towns Erosper in every way. He said what exington needs most is the abolition of the dispensary. He says, also, that the towns that have voted them out would not?for any amount?vote them back. The latest thing for that town is a cotton mill, the capitol of which will be |100,000. This is but another step in the right direction, for enterprises of this kind brings capitol and labor to a town, without which no town can continue to grow. Leesville has several enterprises already that give employment to a large number of hands, and the mill will greatly add to that already beautiful and prosperous little town. The citizens of Leesville take a pride in her welfare, all pulling-, together for the betterment of the town. Work will begin on the building at an eariy date, and it Will probably be completed by January 1,1008.
