I ' " Number of Lives Lost in Fire. r Kansas City, Mo., May 9.?Firetshie 1 afternoon destroyed the Pepper building, a five-story structure at Locust and Ninth streets, and it is feared that the loss of life may be from three to 20, with 20 injured. Soon after the fire started it was seen that the building, which was e considered a fire trap, was doomed b and efforts were directed toward savt ing lives. The building was occupied ^ by Montgomery, Ward & Co., and 1 more than 200 persons, mostly girls, - were employed. The fire gained rapid headway.
