Unwritten Law to be the Plea.
Spartanburg, S. C?, May 5.?W. H.
Mills, who early last March, shot and
killed Frank Deal, manager Blacksburg
cotton mills, made application
for bail through his attorney, Stanyarne
Wilson, before Judge D. E. Hydrick
yesterday afternoon, which was
refused, Judge Hydrick holding that
the case was not bailable. The killing
of Deal was because of Deal's alleged g
attentions to Mrs. Mills.
The affidavit of Mrs. Mills, wife of
defendant, was highly sensational.
The affidavit submitted by her stated
she had improper relations with Deal
while she was teaching school at
Grover, near Blacksburg. Deal, she
affirmed, often visited her room and
that he had offered her money. While
she worked in a millinery store at i
Blacksburg Deal agreed to furnish her 1
money to open business for herself. <
Mills is in jail in Cherokee county, *
where he was committed shortly af- <
ter the killing of Deal. The unwritten <
law will be his pl'ea when the case is i

Wilmington, N. C., May 9'.?In a tit T

Washes Bamberg Success. t
While the Carey-Cothran law was 3
getting into working order, Bamberg
county had prohibition for three *
weeks. Like the people of Union 1
county, the citizens there saw and
were convi^^ed that prohibition
meant less drunkenness, less disorder, j
more money spent in paying bills and 1
... i
buying the necessities ana camions *
of life. That short test of prohibition
caused the thinking people of Bam- (
berg county to sit up and take notice, <
and the result now is that a strong (
movement is on foot to do away with
all their county dispensaries, and
divert the $100,000 that was last year ?
spent on liquor in that county into 1
channels that will do more people
more good. Bamberg is moving
along the right line, and we wish for
her the greatest possible success.? ^
