Can be Utilized in Various Ways to Advantage by Feeding to Animals, But is Dangerous for Cows. r For green food, to cut and in the I green state without curing, there is nothing better, perhaps, than the sor- _ ghum. Planted or sowed in May in ~ drills, on rich ground or with a good 1 fertilizer, and if given only one or two plowings, it comes early and is H 'ready to begin to cut if only half grown, or just before the seed heads appear. After the first stalks are cut, it puts out more stalk9, and yields a second, and perhaps a third, cutting during the season. The yield per acre is large, and it makes a capital feed for all stock, work team, hogs and sheep. ? After the seed heads are mature, or ^ nearly so, it yields .a good quantity of grain, as well as forage, which all animals readily eat. The seed are fine for poultry and the sweet and ^ juicy contents of the stem, despite the rather hard outside coating, are greedily devoured, or rather chewed up ^ fine, by the stock. The woody fibre . is not swallowed, except in small part, but is rejected after the sweet g juice has been extracted. Hogs are g. especially fond of it, and the bogasse, ^ or woody fibre, left by the animals g constitutes a nice and soft bedding j. for stables. Any farmer, whether he is short, of 1 forage or not, would do well to plant if no more than half an acre of sor- 1 s1 ghum, to run along with the dry feed after midsummer. Should dry weather ^ come on, and the pastures become ^ brown and short, a small ration even ^ once a day of the sorghum will help ^ the milch eotos wonderfully. Hogs . may be kept thrifty on it alone until ^ the field peas come in. A patch of it 0 near a poultry yard will keep the hens laying all summer after the ^ seeds appear. The heads, cut and ^ cured, are fine winter forage for ani- 0 mals. The blades may be stripped oi from the stalks, and cured as blade fodder. The whole plant is valuable. ^ Even the' stubble, plowed up and thrown in washes and gullies, helps to . ? ' .. . a catch the soil and fill up the washes. ~ As they soon decay and add vegeta- c' ble matter, they'll help ta keep the soil level and fertile. It is a valuable crop and should be largely grown.? ^ Columbia Record. e< Tyner's Dyspepsia Remedy a ,L Guaranteed Cure. n If you suffer from Dyspepsia or.
