They will majce a tremendous mistake if they should listen to the beautiful pictured possibilities of those advocates working % the scheme to better themselves at the expense of those out in the rural v 1 country, whose products on the farm % wiflfhot be increased at all, while the expenses of running a small,' new county government, which commonsense and fair reasoning ^-unquestionably show to be a fact, that taxes fe- must, therefore, be heavier to meet the legitimate county expenses w?ich are sure to follow. We trust that the better judgment of these citizens will prevail at to-day's meqtnfg, and especially should a vote ever be reached, that they wil} forever bury such a scheme. V ' We must admit, however, that the people of this section have been neglected by our county commissioners r- in not providing them with a good, : direct, substantial public road 'to Lexington court'house. The Dispatch has for many years advocated good roads through this country, but only secured promises. We are sure, with ddcent roads and proper recognition, . these people would never have c thought of leaving Lexington. ' .* /, For the first time in thef histpry of the Charleston Medical College a young lady, Miss Eleanor Bennette Saunders, of McConnellsville, Ygrk 0' county, has graduated with first honors, and well docs she wear the honor.} ^ We are told that Dr. Sannder^ is "a * gentle, modest, retiring young lady.*' . That sh8 will meet with success in her-chosen profession is not doubted. T"'-l Women are rapidly taking the place of men in most every walk of life. Bite Some how they have a better way of doing things, and we can see no reason why women should not be more I successful in the practice of medicine, especially in the hospitals, than men. We beg to differ with onr contemporary. If the city fathers' of Edgefield, the sheriff and magistrates of the county will do their - duty, as they are supposed to do, the blind tigers can be stopped in Edgefield. Get in behind your officers and T they will soon make it too hot for the blind tigers. If a man thinks that he - can run a blind tiger in the town of Lexington he is mistaken. Sheriff Corley would ha e him before many days. We will admit, however, that there are not many Sheriff Corley's in South Carolina to-day. i Next week the old soldiers of South i-na T*r?n V?o ir? Every old soldier that can possibly go should take advan, tage of this opportunity to meet and converse with their fellow comrades of the long ago. The young people too,?everyone, from the oldest to the youngest?should go and do honor to the men who wore the grey. The dispensaries in Berkley county have not yet opened under the new system and tho people are getting anxious. In other counties the people are trusting and praying that the time will not be distant when they can vote the "cussed" things out for once and always. > * i s V, The State says "it would be unwise to postpone any good work." To this we agree and we would be more than "dee-lighted" to see The State, South Carolina's leading daily, put( forth all her efforts to kill the "nefarious" county dispensaries, even if we "did not hit the . State dispensary until it was dead." All hail the old Confeds! We honor you, wp love you, and when the toils of life afe over and you shall have passed-over the river to rest with those of your comrades who have gone before, we will love and cherish your memory. . The Lexjngton County Fair will be held on October 22, 23 and *24. This will not interfere with the dates of the Tri-County 'Fair at Batesburg, which will bq held on the 14th, 15th and 16th. And some have no coats at all/ neither have they any frocks. -There is at least one Mayor in South Carolina that has the moral and physical courage to do his duty regardless of friend or foe. The County Dispensary BoardMessrs. R. L. Keisler, Dr. J. L. Shuler and J. Weir Addy?were in session yesterday and opened in public, in their office, the fifty-four seal bids for liquors for the three county dispensaries. We were present and pronounce the work very tedious and difficult. Everything, wines, beers, whiskies and brandies were classified and arranged for convenience in making selections. After due consideration and using best judgment as to quality, &c., bids were accepted, for supplies as will be seen next week. ? Increase of Pensioners. The total number of pensioners on the State roll is 9,015, a net increase of 73 over last year. The legislature at its last session increased the appropriation from $225,000 to $250,000 ,of which $5,000 is for artificial limbs and must be expended for limbs only.
