Pittsburg, Pa., April 24.?As a precautionary measure 22 detectives and a squad of armed policemen were stationed in the Carnegie Music Hall, during the address of Senator Benj. R. Tillman, of South Carolina, who discussed the race problem before the Park Avenue (Allegheny) Athletic club. Several exciting incidents occurred during the address, but no trouble resulted. There were but ten negroes in the audience which filled the music hall to overflowing. At the close of his address in which he declared the races in the south were gradually becoming more opposed to one another, Senator Tillman called for a vote of the audience as to whether the negro was the equal of the white man. The entire audience except the ten negroes voted in the negative by rising. One man took exceptions to Tillman's remarks and made several interruptions. Tillman had him admit he came from Europe and then bitterly denounced Europeans in America who undertake to judge questions cuneerning this country. In speaking of whether the negro can be educated Senator Tillman declared that Booker T. Washington was the harbor of refuge and safety to which people flee when other places fail, and that Booker T. A French gentleman anxious to find a wife fbr a nephew went to a matrimonial agent, vflio handed him his list of lady clients. Running through this he came to his , wife's name, entered as desirious of obtaining a husband between the ,ages of twentyeight and thirty-five?a blond preferred. Forgetting his nephew, ha hurried home to announce his discovery to his wife. The lady was not 1 at all disturbed. "Oh, yes," she Said, "that is my name. I put it down when you were so ill in the spring and the doctors said we must prepare for the worst." Cyclone in York County. Columbia, April 25.?A cyclone passed through parts of York county vpsterdav afternoon demolishing Mr. y y w Tom Steele's home at Indian Hook and injuring* him badly with fallingdebris. It also unroofed a barn and turned a negro shack around at Tjrzah,^ and jumped to J. H. Barry's place and unroofed a gin house, tore up his barn and killed* a mule. t. Relief from Rheumatic Pains. To the Editor of The Dispatch; The farmers in this section are well up with their work. Most of them have finished planting corn and watermelons, and have their ground readv for cotton. Some have planted,. but most farmers postponed putting the seed in the ground until the weather got warmer. McGill Bros, are preparing to do a large lumber business in this section. The}* have bought an engine, which arrived at Pelion last week. ' The two-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Linford Barefoot was buried at Antioch church on the 16th. Birmingham, Ala., April 25.?Becoming in possession of a knife in some manner, Robert Watts, a white 'man, who was hanged at Guntersville this morning for the murder ^ of Purd Winkle, a Confederate veteran, resisted the officers when they went to his cell. Amonia was thrown into his cell until he was overcome and it was necessarv to drag him to the gallows. On the gallows he continued to struggle, all the time coughing and moaning piteously.
