Girl of Fifteea Fired at Negro.
Calmly glancing down the barrel of
a double-barreled 9hotgun, the business
end of which 9he trained deliberately
upon the bulky form of her assailant,
Miss Ida Smith, a young girl
15 years of age, living seven miles
southeast of Decatur, near Snapfinger
creek, emptied both barrels of the
weapon at Jim Sellers, a negro who
was advancing upon her with an uplifted
knife, and saved herself from
being murdered at her home Friday
afternoon.

take her life Miss Smith was alone at
the home of her parents with only a
3-year-old infant as her companion.
The babe was sleeping quietly upon
the bed and the industrious young girl
was whitewashing the hearth of the
front room. Her mother, in company
with a neighbor, had gone to the nearby
creek to fish.
, Suddenly the silence of the room
was broken by the grating of a window
in the rear. Hastily turning, Miss
Smith was almost paralyzed to see the
burly form of a negro crawling through
the opening with a long knife open in
his hand.
"I am going to kill you, and I am
going to do it now," growled the negro
as he placed one foot over the window
sill and prepared to draw his body into
the room. Not for one instant did

Something must be done and done
quickly. Dropping the whitewash
brush to the floor, she sprang to the
side of the bed, as the negro supposed,
to secure the sleeping baby and flee.
But Miss Smith did not contemplate
flight.
A double-barreled shot gun stood by
the side of the bed. Grasping the
weapon in her strong young arms she
threw it to her shoulder and without
any preliminary warning or threats
discharged both barrels at the advancing'
negro. By some mischance none
of the shots took effect, but seeing
that he was foiled and that his own
life was in danger the negro bolted
through the open window and fled.?

Bleeding From The Nose,
Unless it goes too far, need not alarm
you; nay, in many cases may prevent
something much more serious; but
when it requries to be stopped, let the
child sit upright, bathe the neck and
face with cold water, and dissolve a
little alum in water and squirt it up
the nostrils. If this does not succeed
send for a doctor.

Severe Pains
In the bowels and stomach are often
speedily relieved by the application
of a bag of hot salt. A weak solution
of salt and water is recommended by
good physicians as a remedy for imperfect
digestion; and for a cold in
the head it is a complete cure snuffed
up from the hollow of the hand. We
have known severe chronic cases of
catarrh entirely cured by persistent
use of this simple remedy every night
and morning for several months, when
the best efforts of the best physicians
failed to do anjr good.
