Cedar Wood for Lead Pencils.
Now Bought by the Pound, and Growing
Scarcer Each Year.
e The lead pencil is one of the most
3> common articles in everyday use, and
)_ nearly 320,000,000 pencils are manue
factured in this country every year.
0 To manufacture these millions of penr?.
cils there are required 110,000 tons, or
-* 7,300,000 cubic feet, of wood, so that
n each day in the year 800 tons, or 20,r"
000 cubic feet, of wood are used for
e pencils. Since practically all of the
wood is red cedar, and since the pen'y
cil industry is steadily growing, the
supply of red cedar is greatly depleted;
yet no substitute has been found
^ for it. Leaving out of consideration
the important pencils, the average
_ educated American over 10 years of
age uses six pencils of home manuy
facture each year. Ten years ago he
,t used less than five.

a better chance instead of being considered,
as now, a negligible quantity
in its younger stages, and many of
the forest-grown trees which are now
cut for fence posts can profitably be
left to attain their full development
and thus become available for pencil
wood.
