Conductor Wooten 2iffeets Tragic
Death.
Columbia, S. 0., Jan. 16.?Capt.
Charles D. Wooten, of this city, well
known in Augusta, and who for a time
resided there while conductor 011 the
Columbia and Augusta division of the
Southern road, was run over and kill- ;
ed in the yard here 'today, on the
tracks, near the Congaree warehouse.
No one about the yard, and none of
the crew of the train which ran - over
him knew anything about Captain
Woo ten being on the tracks.
* The train was composed of an en
gine and caboose only, assigned to
work duty. It was pulling through
the yard when it struck Captain
Woo ten, passing entirely over his
body, mangling it badly. The train
was in charge of Engineer G. W. Byrd
and Conductor T. A. Myers. Both of
these gentlemen knew Captain Wooten
well and both were greatly shocked
when they found that he had been
killed. The engineer did not see Captain
Wooten until the engine had
struck him, and not a soul on the train
had an idea he was about the yard at
all.
In Columbia Captain Wooten was
very popular and had an unusual number
of friends. He is survived by a
wife and one child.
