WJHTIUM WW?l,!K*mmMl i XT** ?-* ***~ The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, January 16,1907. APPEAL FROM WOMEN. Request Appropriation for Statue of Great Statesman in Statuary Half in Washington. Editor Dispatch: We, the undersigned, representing the King's Mountain chapter, D. A. R., Yorkville, S. C., wish to call again ycur attention and that of your readers to a work in ? i r? wunjii wc ucg lur juiu cuiuiai ncip and cooperation. Last winter, 1906, this chapter inaugurated a movement which had for its object honoring the memory of John C. Calhoun by placing his statue among his compeers :*n the statuary hall of the capitol at Washington. No South Carolinian ever views those stately statues erected by practically all of the states cf the union in memory of their foremost sons without wondering why our place has been so long unoccupied. Last year we wrote to every woman's organization and to all of the newspapers of the state asking them to use their influence to have the lec3 islature appropriate the sum of $10,00D for the purpose of placing a statue of John C. Calhoun i.i the statuary hall of the capitol at Washington. There is no dissenting %*oice in regarding Calhoun as South Carolina's j most fitting representative. He was for forty years the most j conspicuous and influential figure in j national pontics, ns was represents- | Live, senator, secretary of war, seere- | tary of state and vice president. Last j year the bill was unanimously passed j :u the senate, but was not acted on i n the house. 'This winter the petition wil be re- j lewed. The bill will be again intrc- j iuced, and we believe that the legis- : ature cf South Carolina will be proud j ;o place itself on record as the one to j bus fitly honor bur greatest states- j nan. Through the columns cf your paper j Ve wish to appeal to every South Car- j >liua man and woman to give their j mpport and influence to the effort we j ire making to have our dear old State j lcnor herself in according tlMs reccglition to her illustrious son. In the nation's hall of fame shall south Carolina alone be unrepresent'Count not the cost of honor to the dead; Che tribute-that a mighty nation pays Means more than gratitude for glories fled; Tor every noble man that she hath bred Lives in the bronze and marble that we raise, ro lead our sons as he onr fathers led, rhese monuments of manhood brave / and high, [)o more than forts or battleships to fcppn ??jr 3ur dear-bought liberty. They fortify rhe heart of youth with valor wise and deep; rhey build eternal bulwarks, and command Eternal strength to guard our native land." We should be glad to have the citi sens of the State express themselves ipon this subject. Thanking you for the courtesy and encouragement shown us, Very respectfully yours, Miss Maggie A. Grist, Mrs. Walter B. Moore, Regent, Mrs. Sam'l. M. McNeel, Miss Lesslie D. Witherspoon, Miss Fanny Wardlaw, Mrs. G. H. OrLeary, Mrs. Moultrie Bratton, State Regent. Ycrkville, S. C., Jan. 7. "Life Ij a Eare'bit Drcasa" New York, Jan. 9.?With a note lying nearby, in which he had written that "life is a rare-bit dream," the body of Albert A. Chittenden, an ar tist of some note, was found in his luxuriously furnished apartments on West Twenty-ninth street today. Chittenden had committed suicide by inhaling gas, and had been dead at least* three da\*s. Penned on his waistcoast was the following note: "Life is a rare-bit dream; ha, ha, such a funny dream?but, enough, I am ready to awake to something less ridiculous." "Wise Counsel From the South.
