Dam Broke.
, , The dam over Sconter creek, on !
Dunbar road, belonging to Messrs. (
> Ceo. A. Shealy and Jeremiah Shum-.
pert, broke Monday morning. It is |
; V supposed that muskrats caused the
break. The pond was well stocked
with fish of all descriptions and the
neighbors had a mighty feast.

; : Mr. James Bticbman,-while visiting
at the home of Mr. Jacob Smith, at 1
^ v Edmund, on Sunday, had a fine mule
* to break his left hind leg in some un- :
jjfc known manner. . The mule was in
Mr. Smith's stable and just how the
accident occurred is a mystery. It is
; a heavy loss to Mr. Bachman, as the
mule was a fine one, and valued highly
by its owner.

W. Press Summer Dead.
Mr. W. Press Summer, for a long
time one of Peak's most successful
merchants, but later an employee of
W. T. Martin, Columbia, died at the
home of Mr. B. J. G. Lever, in the
Fork, on Thursday last. He had been
a great sufferer from asthma and his
death, while a shock to his friends,
was not unexpected.
Mr. Summer was a pleasant and ]
popular gentleman, but like all of us,
had to enter into that bourne from
whence no traveler ever returns, and j
where he will rest in peace.
Rev. Leslie Pounded.
On last Thursday night Rev. A. S. |
Leslie was greatly , surprised ' at the
pounding given him by the members
of his church and the people of Lexington
generally. Groceries were in
abundance, and the reception ten- |
dered the callers by Rev. Leslie and
family was greatly enjoyed. This is
the second year that this beloved
Man of God has been in Lexington
and, b^ his Christian bearing and devotion
to duty, has won the love, esteem
and confidence of all the people
in Lexington, and the pounding given
him on Thursday evening was only a
slight token of the high appreciation
of his services.

Ths Farmer and the Kingdom.
The farmer, if he only knew it, is
a little nearer the kingdom of heaven
than anyone on earth- He is certain
of three square meals a day and is the
only man who can fence himself in
and live in spite of the rest of mankind.
A few cattle and sheep and
fowl provide him with food and clothing,
while his fields yields him flour
and a source of revenue.?Cotton Journal.
