The legislature meets on January the Honorable City Council: <&*r us better streets and more ngnte. * Hon. M. F. Ansel" will be inaugurated Governor of Soath Carolina on: ^ January 15th. The city of Lancaster has taken a step that other cities and town's in in the State might follow. They have j made the licence of bucket shops for the year 1907, $1,000. ? j Senator Tillman spent the holidays on a lecturing tour. When he takes up his work in the Senate when it re convenes, no doubt he will add much to the interest of that august body. A bill has passed the United States Senate authorizing the treasurer to loan the Jamestown Exposition one million dollars and to take a lien on the first gate receipts. There was less intoxication on the streets of Lexington this Christmas than in any previous year in the history of the town. This is as it should be; if people will and must drink liquor let them do so at home. Congressman Lever did not come home for the holidays, but spent the ' time in Washington looking after important matters pertaining to his office, and of which the people of the State and of the district he represents, are interested. Frank Lever delights to do his dnty, and it is always duty before pleasure with him. 'v. [ Senator Tillman declared on the lecture platform In Birmingham, Ala., ftftonhiy: '/With the oath on my 'V ? the law I would lead a *3 * a man> white ' Iaa<S, who had ravished a woman.'' This expression was received with enthusiastic applause, which shows that a large per cent of the people are in favor of lynching for this particular crime, or, perhaps, admiring the Senator's sincerity, could not help but show their appreciation of his earnestness. V mmmm?mm?ampammmmmmmm The legislature should take some action in the matter of horses being shot by State Constables. During the past year, in fact for several years, it has been customary in the city of Charleston for horses to be - shot in order to capture contraband Whiskey. Why not shoot the driver? The dumb animals.should be protected, because they are not supposed to * know that they are violating the law, while the driver is responsible for ifis every act. We don't think its right and we hope that some action will ' be taken. It is cruel, inhuman and wrong. With this issue of The Dispatch we begin the year. 1907. The year just closed has been a year of many pleasant soc&lahd business relations with ' patrons, a year that h^%b^gj|{ ^us more words of appreciation, of'our efforts to give the people one of the best weeklies in the State than any year in the past, and we begin the new year with the promise that The Dispatch will take no backward step, but will bend every energy to make improvements as the weeks and months go by. We thank oar many readers and patrons for \ their kind support, and we shall strive to merit it in the future as wre believe we have in the past. We have rejoiced in the many improvements that have been made throughout the county during the past year, and bespeak for her still greater improvements during the year 1907. Let there be no stop in the work of development; let us improve what we have, and strive for those things we have . not, but are greatly in need. This is a progressive age and we must keep . abreast of the times. For eaeh and everyone of our readers, we wish a year of peace, happiness and prosper; ity. To the Editor of the Dispatch: One of t?ie most beautiful home weddings ever witnessed took place last Tuesday eve, December 25th, at the handsome home of Mr. and Mrs. O. Steele. Their home was attractively decorated in evergreens and white carnations and an appropriate and pretty effect was seen in the large wedding bell hung from the arch in the center of the parlor. The entire lower floor v as lovely for this occasion with its handsom^ furnishings and artistic deqprations. Promptly at 6 o'clock Mr. Wm. Steele began the strains of Mende^ shon's wedding march. First came the ushers, Mr. Pierce Shull and Miss Mary Steele each bearing a candle, then Mr. Charlie Cromer with Miss Ida Shull and Mr. Sidney Steele with Miss Mattie Roof, then little Sam i Steele with little Cora Shull strewing beautiful white flowers. The bride, Miss Dora Steele, leaning on the arm of the groom, Mr. Estus Shull, stood upon a magnificient rug directly unaer the bell. The marriage ceremony was verv solemnly performed by Rev. J. W. Kease. At 7 o'clock the dining hall was opened and the guests assembled at the long extension table, which was ! draped with snowy linen. The supper was elegant and well prepared. " The bride was gowned in white silk, j: trimmed in ribbon and lace, a tulle veil and orange blosSoms crowned her head and carried a boquet of bridal roses. The bridesmaids wore white and carried bouquets of white carnations/ The groom and groomsmen | were attired in evening suits with white vests and ties. The bride and grlom are Lexingtonjans.y each young, handsome and coming of families whose records are high and each possessing a personal popularity which could only come of very attractive individuality. In later hours the guests were entertained with vocal and instrumental also graphophone music, and the young folks had two "old time" cake walks. The cakes were won by Mr. and Mrs. Estus Shull and Sam Steele and Cora Shull, the flower children. The bridal presents were useful, ornamental and valuable. Mr. and Mrs. Steele entertained their numerous guests with most genial grace and cordiality. The large number of guests will long remember this pleasant occasion. A Guest. The official investigation into the cause of the wreck at Lawyers, Va., on Thanksgiving day, in which President Spencer and several others were killed, has been concluded, and the responsibility for the wreck is placed upon G. D. Mattox, the block operator at Ragoon station. Hardly any rich man could make a living following the advice he gives to young men on how to do it. North Dakota and other northwestern states are in the midst of a coal famine and there is much suffering in consequence. John Shelton, a Spartanburg negro who killed his father-in-law, will be hanged the 4th of January, the supreme court having denied his appeal. Fruit Trees for Spring and Fall.
