Spring Hill Sparks.
To the Editor of The Dispatch:
Christmas, with its festivities, is
upon us, and the small boy with his
fire-crackers and other fire works, is
disturbing the elements, Tfhe weather
is crisp and cold, and a sparkling,
swirling fire of hickory, is our chief
decoration and comfort. Everything
is quiet, not even a drunk man observed
so far?no " Christmas casuali
ties."
With this Yuletide, when all are expected
to be happy, some of us have
our sorrows. Just as the blaze of the
rising sun of this Xmas was dispelling
the remainder of the night, we
stood by the bedside of our "old friend
and schoolmate of long years ago?
dying. John A. Metz has passed into
the wierd, mysterious beyond, and all
that knew him, knew him to be a
man of unspotted integrity, as well
as one of unimpeachable honesty.
Among the Christmas visitors home
during this season, we mention:
Prof. Geo. M. Eleazer to the maternal
roof, who is now teaching a
flourishing school in Saluda county;
Miss Ethel Eleazer, who is attending
the University of South Carolina at
Columbia, and Prof. A. P. Sites and
wife, who have charge of the High
school at Pacolet.
Mr. Juny Boland, of Chapin, who
has been confined to his room for
quite awhile, is improving.
During the absence of Mrs. R. W.
M. Eleazer, of Peak, while visiting
her father at White Reck, her husband,
Walt, the Mayer boys, Owens
Chapman, the Eargle boys and other

Christmas night.
At the conclusion of the chicken
roast, prepared by that veteran, Geo.
Cumalander, Jr.,the question arose as
to the best jig jerker in the party.
After testing all present, Mr. Owens
Chapman was an easy winner.
It -seems that Peak Station will
have to have a detective. On Christmas
day a bicycle was stolen in broad
daylight. About a month ago the
store of Chapman & Derrick was
robbed of about $100 worth, and six
months previous, a car was broken
open and a lot of clothing stolen.
Again.

State is Owing More
Than is Now on Zand.
Just now the State of South Carolina
is in the position of a man who
owes just twice the amount he has,
with the prospect of an early call for
the settlement of the debt. In fact
the State owes about $150,000 for interest
and $150,000 for a note for interest
past due and has about $150,000
on hand. The taxes are coming in
slower than ever before and in fact
collections are $125,000 behind the
figures of last year.
