On Monday at 12 o'clock there was - a call meeting of the business men P and citizens generally of the town of Lexington for the purpose of meeting Mr. VanEtten, the general manager of the South Carolina Public Service Corporation, and to hear the proposition for bpilviing the^ electric railway j hrom Charleston, S. C.,"to Charlotte, N. C., a: distance of 500 miles. , The line will come by way of Orangeburg, Sandy Run, Bakersville, New Brookland into Columbia; from Columbia it-will take a direet line to Winnibofo, Chester, Rohk Hill, on to Charlotte, N. C-, wHh a loop from rtolnmVa. tbmnp-Vi Brookland to Lex- i ington, Rocky^ell, up through the EUa section to Etheredge, Fox, Mi. V .Willing, Emory and to Saluda court house, thence to Greenwood, Abbeville, Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, Union and connecting again at / Chester, completing; the iGop. A branch from Saluda court-house to Newberry on up to Laurens, and in this way all the important towns of the np country will-be reached. The meeting was called to order by Col. Geo. Bell Timmerman, who nominated Mr. Samuel B. George, our worthy Clerk of the Court, who v is fv always full of pluck and eneigy, ever ready to take hold of anything that has an eye for the betterment of his town, county and state, as chairman. | D. R. Haltiwanger was elected secretary. Mr. VanEfcten, in an impressive and business-like manner explained the object of his visit. He asked that we, the citizens of Lexington, as well as all those living along the proposed , route, co-operate with them in their work. That 90 per cent, of the stock had already bedn subscribed by northern capitalists, and there only remains 10 per cent, to be taken up. This ten per cent, is to be subscribed U V poi tdco (UVUK UUC pivpvoVM uuv, 1 not by the people of Lexington alone, j bat by parties living in the towns and country alike, along the whole line. The une, if completed, will be 500 miles in length, afod at an estimated cost of $20,000 per mile, it will take ten million dollars to construct the vH. f:road. v ... v There are thirty engineers now at work on the survey and the first ^ corps will reach Lexington in about . 30 lays. Mr. VanEtfcen spoke of the great value of tiiese railroads to a country. That besides hauling passengers,' freight, etc., they could carry the children along the line to and from school. -That in most cases where these railroads have been built, the value of property increased double in a very short time. At the end of Mr.; VanEtten's address, and at his suggestion, Col. Timmerman moved that the Chairman appoint a committee of five, with the privilege of increasing the number at any time, to assist the promoters in every way possible with their project, which motion was earned. Chairman George appointed the following gentlemen on the committee: Col. George Bell Timmerman, John J. Taylor, W. P. Roof, G. M. Harman ana Alfred J. Fox. The following resolution was offered by Mr. Timmerman and unanimously adopted: Be it resolved, that it is the sense of 't this meeting of the business men of U119 WUIU11UUIIV) llUdb UiC |>MIU lVi UiO building of an electric railroad through this county, as proposed by Manager YaiiEtten, is heartily, approved and endorsed; and that the same have the hearty co-operation of the citizens of ; this vicinity. Mr. VanEtten was accompanied by ** Mr. W. W. Wells, also a representaw tive of the above company. Both 91 these gentlemen are of pleasing perW sonality, good conversationalists and _ it was a pleasure to have them with ^ us on this occasion, and especially on the mission on which they came. A < hearty welcome awaits their return. Leaving behind him a pretty young wife in tears, more or le9s Baggage and several railroad and express officials who would give much to lay hands upon him again, twenty-three-yearsold T. S. Travers, a telegraph operator of itinerant habits, cashed two -forged express money orders here Sunday evening and disappeared, after "making a night of it" in the red-light district, with the proceeds, $86.26. Travers came here with his wife about a week aero from Elko, Ga., and after a few days was given work in the office Of the chief dispatcher for the Columbia division of the Southern railway.- He secured board at 809>e Main 9treefc, where his young wife is still awaiting him. Sunday evening he said he wa9 in need of some ready money and asked Mr. George Wilkins, who i9 also em-' ployed in the dispatcher's office, if he would accompany him to the express office and identify him, so that he could ca9h two money orders. Mr. Wilkins could not go? to the express office, but instead called up the express people, told them the circumstances, and asked if the orders would be cashed if he endorsed them. Receiving an affirmative reply, he inscribed his name upon the backs of the orders and dismissed the incident from his mind, Trayers having given him no reason to aoubt his honesty. \ When Travers overstayed his sup per hour, Mr. Wilkins began to make ! inquiries and -ascertained that he had disappeared. He notified the police j and telegraphed the agent of the ex- i press company at Elko. A message j received from Elko stated that the j orders were forged. How Diphtheria is Contracted One often hears the expression, "My child caught a severe cold which developed into diptheria," when the truth was that the cold had simply left the particularly susceptible to the wandering diphtheria germ. When Chamberlam's Cough Remedy is given it quickly cures the cold and lessens the danger of diphtheria or any other germ disease being contracted. For sale by Kaufmann Drug Co. Seep Croiag.
