POSSE KILLS NEGRO
WHO MURDERED FIVE
Officers of the Law and Citizens Chase
and Finally Capture Negro Who
Committed Many Murders?An Ex- !
citing Chase.
Asheville, N. C., Nov. 15.?Standing
at bay, fighting with all the desperation
of a man who laughs at death
"Will Harris," the five times murderer,
fell riddled with bullets from
the rifles of cool but determined officers
and citizens in the woods near
Fletcher, known as the "Westfieldt
property," at 12.15 o'clock today.
He died as he lived, his hand raised
against every man, fighting to the
last, giving shot for shot until his last
cartridge was expended. Then, as if
with one accord, the avenging rifles
rang out, carrj'ing the message of
death to the murderer of the brave officers,
Blackstock and Bailey, and of
innocent negroes.
At 7 o'clock this morning a report
reached the city that bloodhounds had
followed the scent to Buena Vista,
eight miles from Asheville, and that
the animals had lost it there, owing
to interruption from farmers' dogs.
I Three posses of officers and citizens
| immediately set out for Buena Vista
and there it was learned that the
negro desperado had been seen leaving
a barn just before daybreak. It
was stated that the fugitive had taken
the high road for Arden, three miles
further on.
Down the road at a 2.40 gait came
ex-Chief Jordan, O. H. Wells, Dr.
Russell, H. M. Roberts and N. P.
Baldwin, shouting to other members
of the posses to make for the woods
where the negro had taken refuge.
The pfcsse3 quickly closed in, took the
road turning to the right from Fletchers
and a fusillade of shots from the
woods 10 minutes later told the inhabitants
of the surrounding country
that justice had been done and that
the cold-blooded murderer of two
white policemen and three innocent
negroes had been avenged.
At about 2.30 the posse arrived in
Asheville with the body of the dead
man, which was taken at once to the
undertaking rooms. Like wildfire
spread the news of the man's death
and in less than half an hour south
Main street was blocked with a crowding,
shouting mass of men and women,
to see the man who in less than
20 minutes had taken the lives of five
men, three of his own race.
For some time it was feared that
the mob would take the body of the
negro from the officers and follow out
its threat of burning it. But the sheriff
and his men guarded the doorway of
the undertaking .establishment with
loaded rifles and the crowd later dispersed.
Tonight all is quiet in the
city.
Bilious Attack Quickly Cured.
A few weeks ago I had a bilious attack
that was so severe I was not able
to go to the office for two days. Failing
to get relief from my family physician's
treatment, I took three of
Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets
and next day I felt like a new
man. H. C. Baily, Editor of the News
Chapin, S. 0. These tablets are for
